Even the people shooting nice canon lenses like 17-55s and similar often don't have hoods on. There might be a reason (save space in the bag, don't need it, etc.) but I assume that most just don't have one or care how it could help

Sometimes it's just easier to leave it reversed, though obviously that doesn't work for some lenses. Actually I think that's just a good reason to not use the on-camera flash .On camera flash is good for fill-flash outdoors in a pinch (who want to carry around the external flash all day, and for the 7D, the flash is the TRIGGER for external flashes

Yet in many other situations you cannot even tell the difference. If you're shooting with your back to the sun and there's no strong highlights in front of you then chances are you wont notice any/much of a difference (certain lenses being better/worse than others).

Outdoors in a pinch, on camera flash is still not ideal. But having the power to do it well is much-preferred. I was doing landscape shots last year and had an impromptu shoot that wouldn't have even been possible if I didn't have my external flash... -Dave

Ha ! It had to be visible in the corners if she was shooing anywhere near 70mm. regards, george w
