I guess I've never really noticed this backwards hood thing that's apparently so common but I've always been surprised how few hood I see period. Even the people shooting nice canon lenses like 17-55s and similar often don't have hoods on. There might be a reason (save space in the bag, don't need it, etc.) but I assume that most just don't have one or care how it could help

I sometimes leave my hood on backwards because, as many other members have said, I just want to take a quick snapshot and the hood was already reversed to save space in my bag.

However, I like using the hood also because it makes me feel cooler. Is that only me!? I get a lot of people coming up to me and telling me my camera is huge. (-_o)

The problem then is that the lens hood is off drifting someplace. Sometimes it's just easier to leave it reversed, though obviously that doesn't work for some lenses.

Actually I think that's just a good reason to not use the on-camera flash .

On camera flash is good for fill-flash outdoors in a pinch (who want to carry around the external flash all day, and for the 7D, the flash is the TRIGGER for external flashes

That is the only positive in my mind.

In some situations the difference a hood can make is huge. Yet in many other situations you cannot even tell the difference. If you're shooting with your back to the sun and there's no strong highlights in front of you then chances are you wont notice any/much of a difference (certain lenses being better/worse than others).

Not to mention that the lens hoods on really wide lenses are often nearly useless, as the angle at which they're effective is so minimal that it's barely worth the effort.

I suspect most people still use one though if they're not using a filter and want to protect the front element a little.

Open bag, grab camera, back to the sun, who cares. Wedding photog, working the flare, good on them. Grabbing the camera, not knowing any better, whatever. Knowing better, posting online to display superior knowledge, yawn.

...I carry around an external flash all day. Outdoors in a pinch, on camera flash is still not ideal. But having the power to do it well is much-preferred. I was doing landscape shots last year and had an impromptu shoot that wouldn't have even been possible if I didn't have my external flash...

Also - the hood blocking the light isn't an issue for the 7D, as some light should get through and trigger the flash :p.

That's okay, I saw a working pro one day who had managed to force the hood on her 70-200 2.8 on....90 degrees out of place ! Ha ! It had to be visible in the corners if she was shooing anywhere near 70mm.
I didn't say anything, but I noticed later in the day she had corrected it.

Bingo. I'll second your yawn.

I use a polarizer a lot and my hoods usually don't get used whenever I use the polarizer. Does this make me a noob...or is the OP trying to look more intelligent than fellow togs?
