I carry my lenses in the case with the hoods reversed for space reasons. I mount them the right way as soon as I put them on the camera. I have seen people with hoods mounted backwards and in one case they were using the same lens I was (28-135mm IS). I politely mentioned that the hood was backwards and they're reaction was "oh, I'm not using a pro camera like you are". Says the noob with the 7D to the guy with a gripped Rebel.

Why would you say that to somebody? Not "Hey, would you mind if I asked why you keep your hood on backwards?" but rather "Excuse me, but I just wanted to let you know that you're doing that wrong." Do you also walk up to women and say "You know, you're wearing a white blouse. Aren't you aware that it's November 14th?" Or, slightly more obscurely (well, not anymore really) "Sir, you're eating a Twix. Don't you know that you're an old man?"

I'll reiterate my reasons for "backwardsing" as simply as possible:

1. I keep my lens cap on backwards in the bag because it fits in that way.
2. When I take the lens out, I don't bother to remove the hood, as it would require an extra few (often critical) seconds.
3. I only switch the hood to its correct position when A. I need it for flare-reducing purposes or B. when I need access to any rings/switches it blocks.

If that makes me an amateur, then an amateur I am. Among other things that make me an amateur: I don't make money from photography. That's clearly a secondary factor though!

i wonder if this thread will catch up with the 'tape the Canon logo' thread that's currently running.....

i don't think it matters. some people use hoods all the time, some don't even own them, some people use them shooting into the sun, some people like the flare effect to save adding it in PP [] some people would rather use a UV filter, some people only use a hood when they want to.......

Exactly, what's the point of discussing why some people have their hood in the "storage" postion?

Congrats on hitting the jerk quota for today, Ken!

No, that was 'Sarcastic Ken.' 'Jerk Ken' would have responded to your earlier post with something like "Congrats on hitting the ignorance quota for today, Brandon."

Clearly the two are not mutually exclusive.

Sometimes I put my cap on backwards so I can fit the camera up to my face (usually when holding the camera in the portrait position). I find reversing my lens hood helps balance things out....

lol.. i saw this post and i must admit i'm actually the other way around. when i got my 30D + 17-55, i was trying to find a separate compartment to store the hood when it's not mounted on the lens. i didn't know u can mount backwards to store. haha

Just got back from a weeks holiday in Cornwall and couldn't believe how many people had their lens hood mounted backwards

Easily 80% of all DSLRs I saw had them on the wrong way around

I was trying to think of how anyone could think that they had it right. Anyone here used to do it before realising their error? What did you think it was for???

I see some people do this from time to time but 80% seem a little high. They must be smoking something in Cornwall that forces them to lose all logic. Or at least 80% of then lol

Lol i always do it for my Sigma 30 1.4 hood for obstruction reasons as it does looks big mounted the usual way. Well, i always have a 67mm filter so i won't have to worry about it too much.

when I don't feel I need my hood I reverse it because that's the way I store them in my bag... not ignorance ...

I know, right? I'm just sayin'...

You'll probably find that most of these people are taking photographs and are not photographers...

Maybe you can liken this 'habit' to wearing a baseball cap backwards? :-)

I'm just wondering why you even care about other people's hoods...
