You've got better gear than any sub-18 year old should have. Even after my first summer job, the only tangible goods I owned included a video game console, and books. Personally, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how you got all of that.

Many of us have kids. I have two. If not for them I'd have a boat, motorcycle, beach condo, and my dream setup: 5dii with a 24-105L and the 100-400L.

But my kids mean more to me than any of that, and they need things (and have an addiction to food, like me).

So, even though I earn about five grand a month, the 3900 I get to keep goes toward the mortgage, utilities, food, gas, and more. My personal fun allowance is 200 bucks a month, the same as my wife's.

So if I want a camera that cost two or three grand, I have to get a second job (which is doubtful, because I work fifty hours a week as it is and I miss my kids when I'm at work), or I have to save.

At you age you have the world in your hands. Your roads are wide and go in all directions.

I'm not complaining about my limited options, but I can tell you this: you have nothing to complain about. We middle aged dads daydream about being in your situation, even though we know it's just a silly fantasy.

Get out there. Shake the small town dust off your feet.

Here's a challenge: save up the thousand dollars you need, and then use it to help the poor. Then do it again and buy your lens.

Finally, go visit a childrens hospital. You'll really gain some perspective on life after that.

Thank you. bw!

Two kids' school fee is cool $50,000 per year after tax for me.
No wonder I still don't have EF 600L yet ;)

Most people don't clear $50k per year, so don't feel too sorry for yourself.. :p

Wow, for a minute I thought my son was on the forum. Certainly sounded like the same story.

Had a job. Hated it. Can't work a job I don't like. Somebody give me something for nothing.

Good luck kid.

Bob

Even though this may sound a tad harsh, it seems to be true for many. Want something? How bad do you want it? Bad enough to work two jobs for it? You are the master of your destiny.....or as Nike says "Just do it."

I think you should work part time as a photographer assistant, learn tons from someone with experience, become a better photographer and in the mean time borrow the lens from the photographer you assist ;) cheers!

Im 17 and have been into photography for 5+ years. I still use a basic DSLR with an 18-55 mm lens.

You can still get great shots with not the best gear, ive worked my ass off to get to where I am now and my parents dont pay a dime on any photography gear.

I bought a 10-22 a week ago, great feeling to know you work for your stuff. Get a job, you can handle two. Ill be going to two schools and having a steady jobs + 2 freelance jobs all at the same time.

I cant do many things, but if I can do that, you can too buddy.

Good luck

Anyways convince me this lens isnt worth me selling my kidney for.

Rebel T1i -

^^^that's why it's not worth a kidney to you....most the images you are seeing with the lens are shot with a FF camera...the lens isn't the best option for crops in my opinion...if you like the look of the images look at a crop dedicated UWA...

something like a sigma 10-20mm can be had for sub $400...

Hey kid, sell one of your computers for a 17-40L and, really, try to enjoy your life with mommy and daddy while it lasts.
