This was the starting point of a white water rafting trip i took a couple of months ago, it was great fun!

A longer exposure would have been more ideal as the camera was doing more to stop the action than it should have. Also that blue box on the left is quite distracting; not something you can entirely help but just my $0.02. Great potential here.

Thanks for that, I do wish that i'd increased the exposure time aswell, i'm heading back there soon for another go, as most of my other shots didn't come out well at all. I included the blue box on purpose to break up the green a little. Appreciate the comments.

I, personally, enjoy the greenery (could use some more contrast, possibly a teensy tad bit more saturation to give it some punch), but that's my personal taste. If you like the box in there, then by all means include it. You're shooting for yourself, not for a client.

It looks like this was taken handheld. For a long exposure to get the whispy, smooth look on the water you'll need a tripod and trigger the shutter either with a remote release or using the self timer function (2 sec is sufficient). Also using the mirror lockup function works wonders. Believe it or not, the force of you pressing the shutter button and the force of the mirror slapping up and down inside the camera is enough to ruin a photograph.

I see what you are saying, I do prefer the shots with smoother looking water, somehow it makes the shot look less "crunchy"??, for lack of a better description. I didn't know anything about the mirror lock up, being that I am still a major newb, so I will be checking that out from now on in.
