I don't mean to bore the astute readers. I've been reading the "New PC" posts here, but I'm still not quite sure which way to go. Please tolerate one more. Thx
I need to upgrade my PC. I'm retired and on a limited income yada, yada. My budget is around $500. I use Lightroom mostly and occasionally Elements 9.
I pose this question to the enlightened ones on POTN.

Would this be acceptable?
I'm considering this from Dell :
The price is $499

INSPIRON 560 DESKTOP
MEMORY 6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz- 2 DIMMs
VIDEO CARD Intel® HD Graphics (I do have a Geforce 8400 card on my current PC that I can use)
MEDIA READER Integrated 8 in 1 Media Card Reader
SOUND CARD Integrated 5.1
Inspiron 620 MT Inspiron 620 Minitower w/ Black Bezel FT16
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ i3-2100 processor(3MB Cache, 3.10GHz)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit, English
HARD DRIVE 1TB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
OPTICAL DRIVE 16X DVD+/-RW Drive

Two cores/four threads is a bit on the light side, but for $500 that's not too bad. It has an integrated graphics card which is probably ok. The 8400 is a really old card - my 8600 is about the same, pretty slow by modern standards. You'll want at least one more hard drive, even just a small one for cache, but personally I use a five drive setup

c: 60GB SSD for OS, programs, swap
d: 2TB disk for personal images, general data
e: 2TB disk for commercial images
f: 3TB disk for media
g: 120GB SSD as cache and for a few other random things

Thanks for your reply. I didn't think about another hard drive to use as a cache, but I am considering spending a little more to get a SSD. Overkill for that system?

I wouldn't worry about cache as much as simple backups. I'd also try Dell Outlet for even better deals.

Disk is the slowest part of a modern PC. An SSD will speed it up. It can take some experimentation to work out where best to use it - ie as cache, as image storage, etc. Having the OS on SSD is a luxary, fast loading of OS and apps is nice for general use, but really makes little difference to how long processing takes.

Thanks again. Do I understand that to mean that an SSD won't make that much difference in program and file loading times?
(BTW if you ever make it to S. Louisiana I'll buy you a beer.)

It will improve OS boot and program loading times, however with a modern hard disk those times are pretty short anyway. Most of your time is spent in image editing, so it makes sense to speed up something you spend 6 hours a day doing, rather than the boot and program load, which takes 2 minutes.
