I'm taking the motor home into Shenandoah NP, western VA, western MD and all over WV during Sept and Oct. I've gotten lots of info off the internet, but would just like to hear about favorite places in this general area. Nice scenics, fall colors and waterfalls are my main targets, but also enjoy small towns, quaint buildings, etc.

There are some very nice waterfalls along Skyline Drive and beautiful panorama opportunities there also. I am very jealous. You should have a blast.

Thanks, Mark. It should be a lot of fun. We were touring WV on 9/11, got bummed out and went home. Haven't seen that much of the area despite traveling through several time.

White Oak Canyon Falls in SNP, Also the Hoover Presidential Mountain Camp up near camp rapidan. Any of the general SNP overlooks,

As for Western Maryland check out the savage river. Some great stuff for shooting around there.

Thanks much. I've added them to my list.

I second Harper's Ferry. If you're traveling all over WV, try and make it to Lewisberg. Voted best little town in the country, IIRC. It truly is beautiful and quaint.

There are some great scenic spots in Roane County and northern Kanawha County. Hawk's Nest in Fayette County, as well.

Thanks all. Harper's Ferry and Lewisberg were on the list, and now Hawk's Nest is, too.

There is a sweet hike you can do(if you like hiking) that takes you to an overlook that looks over the town of harpers ferry and you can see the shenandoah and potomac rivers and their confluence. Definentally worth looking into. Hike only takes a couple of hours. When your done go into downtown harpers ferry and walk up the main street closest to the potomac river i think (the street near the railroad) at stop at the swiss miss for their famous raspberry vanilla swirl soft serve ice cream!

Definitely hit Little Stony Man Cliffs, Hawksbill, Bearfence, and Blackrock Summit in Shenandoah National Park. The waterfalls in Shenandoah are pretty low right now. I would visit Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia, sounds like the flow is still doing well over there. Harpers Ferry is an awesome place, make sure you hike up to Maryland Heights for an amazing view of the town. If you wanna head out this far east, the Chesapeake Bay has some cool towns like Chesapeake City and Havre de Grace. Not far from Shenandoah National Park is an amazing hike called Big Schloss, in George Washington National Forest. You can find info about that here http://virginiatrailguide.com/2009/09/21/big-schloss/ (external link)

If you have a limited amount of time, hit Blackwater Falls, Shenandoah National Park, and Harpers Ferry. Shenandoah could keep you busy for two weeks easily. Theres also some great hiking and views near Blackwater Falls, such as Spruce Knob, Bear Rocks, and Seneca Rocks.

EDIT: If you're visiting in September, the waterfalls should be goin' a little more. In that case, I'd definitely see Doyles River Falls, Whiteoak Canyon, Rose River, and Dark Hollow. Rose River and Dark Hollow can be done in one hike thats much easier than the dedicated Dark Hollow hike which has a very steep ascent coming back up.

Thanks Sonic. You have expanded my list of "must do's". I'm hoping the water flow will be good this fall, it would be great to combine with fall color.

If you're going to Hawk's Nest, add New River Gorge Bridge and Babcock State Park to the list, they are all fairly close to each other.

There is also the Mystery Hole, a quirky little tourist trap. You can't take your camera inside during the tour, but you can get some shots outside, the building is.. uh, interesting.

If you follow Rt 60 from Hawk's Nest/New River Gorge toward Charleston you can stop at Cathedral Falls (external link) and Kanawha Falls (external link). Cathedral is kind of a blink and miss it thing, it's right off the road and would be on your right going toward Charleston. There is a little foot bridge to walk across, or you can climb out on the rocks directly in front of the falls. At Kanawha Falls there is a little beach/picnic area you can stop at to get some good shots.

One of these days I need to wander over to the eastern part of the state. I've lived here most of my life and have never been to Blackwater Falls or Seneca Rock or any of the other lovely places on that side of the state.

Michelle, Thanks for this info. I'm really intrigued by "Mystery Hole", as intended. The waterfalls sound too easy, so I'll definitely do them.
