First, I would like to say that this is the most fantastic site for Canon enthusiasts and I appreciate all of the knowledge that I've reaped from reading the many posts concerning the G12. I received one yesterday and am very pleased with everything about it. However, I like to shoot in RAW and also have an Xti (400D) that I shoot in RAW. Trouble is, with the G12's CR2 files I can only open them in DPP. I like to use Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop Elements to process my pictures from the Xti. I use Picasa 3 to organize my pictures and it does a decent job of displaying the CR2 files from my Rebel but the displays I have from the G12 look as if they are solarized with such weird, unnatural colors. The Jpgs are displayed okay in Picasa and Elements. When I try to open any G12 RAW files in Elements I get the statement that says that the file is unrecognized. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I stuck with DPP only? Thank you very much
-Mark

You may need to update Adobe Camera Raw and/or upgrade to a more recent version of PS Elements, the latest software does support the G12.

And if that's not an option with your current software, you can always convert your raw files to DNG using the free converter, which works just fine with older Photoshop/Lightroom versions.

That's what I used until I got my new copy of Lightroom that reads the G12 raw naturally.

All the camera manufacturers tend to create their own proprietary RAW file formats, and then the third party software developers have to update their software to handle the new format. Adobe seems to want you to buy an upgrade to their software, rather than always download a free RAW update. I have Photoshop Elements 8, and it cannot be updated to handle the G12 RAW (I have a G11, so no problems), or several other RAW formats. Adobe says I have to upgrade to Elements 9 to be able to handle the newer formats. I also use Picasa for easy organizing, emailing, and Picasaweb features.

I recently purchased a Samsung NX100, and I cannot open the Samsung RAW in it. Adobe does offer a free DNG converter that does handle the newer formats, so I downloaded that to convert my Samsung RAW to the .dng format. Then I can open the .dng file in Elements 8, or even Aperture 3 on my iMac.

Here are links to the Windows and Mac downloads for the DNG converter. The converter will only allow you to convert an entire folder of files, not one file at a time. I download the files from my camera to a single folder by date shot. Then, I create a subfolder and move the RAW files to that one. I have the DNG converter convert and save all the RAW files from that folder, and save the .dng files back to the same folder. It's quick and easy.

Thank you very much for the responses. I didn't realize that there would be different versions of CR2 from the same manufacturer. I thought jpg was jpg and cr2 was cr2. Guess I'm just an ol' dinosaur.
Thanks again - fantastic forum!
