I would like to know people's opinions about trading or selling my XSi and kit lens for the 1dmkII or IIn, I would have to pay about 400 -500 dollars for the difference, I would probably buy at least a nifty 50 until I save up enough to get an 85L or 70-200L.

Now reasons I want to do this are that I hate the autofocus on the XSi, I only use the middle point and use the * button as the focus button and I still can not quite capture action. Also the frame rate is very slow compared to the 1d. One feature I do want and would be missing on the 1dmkii is video. I have made a ton of videos but none with the quality of the dSLR video I have seen, and that would be great for any kind of indie movie production. So if I want video, I'd have to get a 60d or t1/2/3i which have similar autofocus to the xsi, but I'm sure they are improved. Also they cost less to upgrade to. I'm leaning toward 60d but it doesn't have quite the frame rate I want. The 7d is probably the camera for me but now we're above the $1k price range. Not that I have a serious budget, but I'm trying not to spend more than 600 bucks to upgrade.

Also one more question, will I get a better deal if I trade + give cash, or sell the XSi first and then just buy the camera with cash?

Thanks in advance for any help!

60d without a doubt
it has the best autofocus of the ones you listed (rebel series and xxd series) it shoots video, has wireless flash control. has the same sensor as the 7d
etc etc
and it will cost you about what a used 1d2 will cost (give or take a few)

+1. Or better yet, a T2i or T3i.

Snapsort can provide you with an overview.

I don't see how you can pay ~550-600 to upgrade though. The 1DII goes for ~650 or less on the used market, and Xsi goes for ~300 at least.

I recommend the 1DII.
Stunning camera, and (in my opinion) a much better option than the 60D. Once you use a 1 series, you'll never go back!

Looking at your Flickr photo's I don't see anything posted on the front page anyway that shows why you would need a 1D MII. For stationary birds and people, a dslr (1.6x crop factor) with more MPs (18MP) for cropping as well as additional reach would be preferable over the 1D MII's 1.3x Crop factor and 8 MPs.

I had the 1D Classic and 1D MII and can't recommend them highly enough, but for your style of shooting I'd recommend a refurb at 10%-15% off (sorry can't remember exactly) with a trade in of a broken Canon camera. You can often find those for $10-$15 here on the Sell section and elsewhere. Here is the LINK (external link) to Canons site where you can find the T2i and many other possible options.
If I were to upgrade such as yourself I would go with the T2i + a 3rd party grip from someone such as Linkdelight (external link) and either the 50 f/1.8 or the 50 f/1.4.

Just realized my sig is way out of date, I got banned from yahoo along time ago rendering my flickr account unusable! Anyway I started up a 500px account and uploaded a few pics which include a couple things like sports and other action. Also I am shooting backup at a wedding this weekend and will hopefully add some more to my portfolio.

The problem with the XSi is that my current keeper rate is maybe 1/50 or 1/25 photos at most, I know my lenses have a lot to do with it but I can just feel when I don't get the shot, you just know when it didn't quite focus that time or the shutter speed was too slow and you missed that one shot. The 45 point autofocus is very appealing to me also high shutter speed. I also run into a problem with high ISO performance.

Thought 2: I think I would really be happy with the 1d2 but also after borrowing a 7d and shooting a couple short videos with it, I don't think I can go back to cheap handheld camcorder quality. Now that I think about it, 7d has great autofocus and does great video another option is to wait and save up for the 7d which will be a huge purchase and future lenses will have to wait. Hmm...

The 7D is my choice by far, I just didn't know how high you wanted to go budget wise. I'm currently using mine for portraits during the summer months and sports mostly during fall/winter.

http://snapsort.com …D_Mark_II-vs-Canon_EOS_7D (external link) is a good comparison, missing some info like the 1DII's better IQ and actually larger viewfinder do to the sensor size, as well as the VF blackout time and AF system in general.

1DII if you're not focal length limited and need the best AF under 2K, 7D if you need high-ISO, movies, or don't have long enough lenses and the smaller sensor+more pixels are an advantage.

If any of the 1D specific features (VF response and blackout, weathersealing, dual card slots, blah, blahblahblah) that could be another consideration.

If you just want the 7D for movies and high-ISO the rebel T2i has the same sensor/IQ and performs very reasonably for ~550 refurbed from CLP.
