Saw a setup and result in the "Show your setup thread" for Physiogramns, figured I'd give it a try. Started out in my office, but it wasn't dark enough so I went into the garage. Used a small flashlight at first but then switched to one of my green lasers.
In the office I hung the flashlight from the ceiling fan and laid the camera on the floor (which made it a pain in the butt to focus). In the garage I put the camera on a tripod and put it high enough that I could get under it to use LiveView to focus, but low enough to give me a wide frame. Both times the light was shining down towards the camera.
With the laser I didn't want to take the chance of frying my sensor so I put the camera as high as my tripod would allow and aimed it at the floor. Had to get on a ladder to focus but it worked out pretty good.

The whole set (what's in it so far, gonna play more today) can be seen here...Physiograms
Tried varying exposures, but all shots were at f/8 and ISO100, and I also tried a variety of lenses; 100mm L macro, Nifty Fifty, and Sig 18-200mm OS. The Sig works the best because I can get bigger action. At first I used a short string and the swirls wouldn't get too spread out, but in the garage with more room I'm using a longer string so when I swing the laser the swirls get much larger. The only drawback there is that on one side the laser catches the expansion in the floor, so in some shots there's a break in the lines.
Anyhow...thanks for looking and enjoy.
