I've seen football teams posed on a special stand which goes close to straight up. It flattens the picture so that the people on the back row are not too far behind the people on the front row. Used for taking team pictures.

Where can these be rented or purchased?

I think what you are looking for is called Choral Risers.

LINK HERE (external link) for an example. You'll need to find a local company that rents to concert bands most likely. But must schools have several 12' sections as well.

You DO NOT want Choral Risers. You want GPS Risers; see Big K's link above.

What's the difference between choral and gps? Is it that one is more compact?

I haveGPS and can't speak for the choral but the GPS can hold an entire football team and coaches, I have had teams just look at them and say they can't believe they can hold that much weight. They are great, expensive but great

Choral Risers are designed and built to hold choirs and choral groups for the purpose of singing. GPS Risers were designed by a photographer, and designed and built for the sole purpose of posing large groups for photographs.

Thanks. That helps narrow some of the difference of purpose, but what exactly makes them different?

Generally, the depth of each step. Choir risers are wider to allow room for movement during a performance. The GPS risers are very narrow and tend to stack the people close together front to back to reduce depth in the photo.
