I have a question: does DSLR Controller support both contrast (slow) and phase (fast) detection autofocus?

If it does, it should be a great help when doing dot-tune lens calibration using Magic Lantern. For dot-tune, you really need to make your initial (contrast detect) focus to be as precise as possible, and I noticed that when I do contrast detect focusing at longer FL (>100 mm), it is not consistent, most likely because I have to press AF-ON button on the camera, resulting in obvious shaking of the image when zoomed in 10x.

I am still waiting on my first tablet with OTG USB capability (it is on its way).

@cnty: in your camera on what setting is you Exposure simulation?

@pulsar123: DSLR controller can do what Canon can. So contrast is called live auto-focus, phase is called quick and if the camera supports it even face detection focus.

BIG news from the maker of DSLR Controller!!

A few day's ago DSLR Controller for WiFi stick has been released and now also DSLR Controller self got updated with a lot of improvements.

The change-logs are here: http://dslrcontroller.com/download.php#changelog-099-0 (external link)

Back to the WiFi stick version. This a separate APP that is works totally autonomic after setting it up once. It runs on multicore Android sticks which are normally used to run Android on your TV through the HDMI port.

You need the DSLR controller APP, a Android stick and power supply to power the stick through USB so a powerbank is mostly used. You connect the camera and the USB power to the stick where the stick version of DSLR Controller has been installed. Switch on the powersupply and the camera and after about 60 seconds the mirror of the camera goes up and down to inform you that all is running correctly.

Now you take your Andoid phone or tablet and look for the network where the stick is running and if there is no network available the stick creates his own network. Now tap on DSLR Controller and you can control the camera.

A lot of effort went in manually optimizing the transmission of liveview and video and you hardly notice that you are working over Wifi to receive liveview.

A video demonstrating the usage of DLSR Controller WiFi stick can be seen here: http://dslrcontroller.com/news-wifi_stick.php (external link)
If you don't have comment standard switched on in you Youtube player then you miss the statements that since taking the video the liveview and video performance has improved a lot.

I am writing this as an enthusiastic user of the two APPs and am not in any way affiliated to the writer of these APPs.

but does it work on the older models, for example the galaxy S

Thanks! My tablet is almost here, I am itching to give DSLT controller a try :) .

I don't know because the Galaxy S is not in the list of supported devices.

So actually I am disappointed - I guess I expected too much. I somehow expected to see on my tablet everything I'd see on my camera's screen - including all these Magic Lantern add-ons. (Like being able to use dot-tune lens calibration combined with the accuracy of DSLR Controller LiveView AF; or being able to use ML's Ghost image feature, for precise composing multiple shots, using larger tablet screen for convenience.)

Apparently, no such luck. Only the Canon's built-in functions are supported. Am I missing something here? Is there a way to get ML's goodies accessible from my tablet?

I doubt DSLR Controller will ever work with ML functions. The app developer is working from the Canon SDK, I believe.

JennGrover is correct and the Developer is using the Canon SDK. Magic Lantern is side loaded to the existing firmware and the Canon firmware and the Magix Lantern software have to communicate through the USB port and DSLR Controller has to understand the Magic Lantern output.

Till now there is still no beta release or a official release from Magic Lantern for the 5D MKIII.

RE Cables, this is the only one I found that does not require and adapter. (has correct mini to micro ends built in

I use the 1 meter version. IIRC, it was much less expensive ordering from Amazon than directly from the manufacturer.

I got mine from Amazon as well, but recently they have disappeared from Amazon. Maybe they will be back shortly?
