If it is the one I have seen then it requires the camera to be connected to a computer and simply controls the computer remotely.

The problem is not power. The iphone/ipad are only able to appear as usb devices, not hosts. So it is like asking a usb printer to control a usd hard-drive, not really ever going to happen.

Surely a device that goes between as a usb host would work?

I know nothing about this stufff of course.

Yes, that does work, except USB won't do you much good on the iphone/ipad end because apple chose not to allow apps to use it.

However, is you use wi-fi to communicate with the device that can act as a USB host it works fine.

The simplest and most flexible device that has wi-fi and USB hosting is called a laptop, which rather conveniently already has software to control the camera written for it.

I love my iphone and my ipad btw, so apple fanboys can look elsewhere for a fight. Just because I love them doesn't mean they couldn't be better though.

actually i just had another thought. there is a device that is similarly priced to a laptop that can host usb and has wi-fi. its called an Android phone. If you wrote an app to communicate from your iphone to an android phone you could do all of this in a modest sized package :)

I was picturing an iphone lashed to a bracket and used as a video screen on a 5d2 or 7d...

That or wait for the 5d3, which is pretty much guaranteed to have a swivel screen.

now if i could only get a mount for my Acer Iconia A500 to mount it to a tripod or flash bracket so i can use it like i do a field monitor (LCD). my lilliput LCD is smaller, but IQ isnt as good as the tablet screen.

but of course the field monitor is using the direct video output and not an app via usb.

I was unable to purchase DSLR for my Galaxy S ll just now (my first Smartphone). I hope this becomes real real soon! I have a 40D (my first DSLR), and miss the Flip Screen of my G3. This is an exciting App for my needs.

Yeah, it seems Samsung disabled the USB host functionality on the S2 recently. People are expecting the functionality to return with Ice Cream Sandwhich, as well as USB host capabilities for other phones (hardware permitting).
