Question coming from a newbie. Here's a sample I processed and uploaded to my Flickr & Photobucket account. I noticed that the IQ from the Flickr is way better than Photobucket. I can't figure it why. Would anyone know? Thank you all.

Photobucket strips the ICC profile - I wouldn't use it.

I don't know, the Flickr one looks really "crunchy" to me ...

the photo bucket version makes the girl appear to have used a bad tan in the can paste for her orangeness! the flickr one does indeed looks more natural.

Nice, er... Lens :-)

I don't think Flickr 'messes' with uploaded images too much and it does look better in this case.

The flickr image looks better imo, but it's obvious that flickr uses far more aggressive sharpening, it's borderline oversharpened...

is the flickr version oversharpened or is that how it looks on your computer?

I didn't get photobucket earlier (I just recently got into photography), but I heard that they started compressing their files more and that compression screwed up how the image looks. Well, that was a while ago.

I just went w/ flickr.

IMO, the flickr image is oversharpened.

ok, i feel I need to ask my question again in a way that actually makes sense. Not sure why I wrote it that way :P

What I meant to ask is, is flickr sharpening the images, or are you processing it that way? Likewise, is photobucket blurring the image? Which one looks more like the original photo you uploaded? Or is it in-between?

It seems to me, if the image is uploaded and needs to be resized (i'm using free flickr), the resized version will probably have extra sharpening. But if it doesn't need resizing, then image is the same as the original.

When I resized one of my original moon shots to the same size as the flickr version, even w/ resampling using bicubic sharpener, it's still not as "sharp" as the flickr version.

Is that the same for you guys?

Flickr does apply sharpening but doesn't appear to degrade quality by compressing the h*ll out of images. If uploading to Flickr (Or Smugmug etc.) I tend to only lightly sharpen images.

It could be that PhotoBucket has resized? From their support:

Before uploading your images to your Photobucket account, choose either a
display or file size that is equal to or larger than that of your images. You
can do this by clicking on the 'Uploading Options' link in your upload panel
and then on the radio button next to your preferred size. If an option is
grayed out, this means the option is not available for your Photobucket
account type. Selecting a size larger than your images will prevent further
resizing upon upload and help expedite the upload process. To make the changes
permanent, you must upload at least one image from the upload panel. This is
important for Pro users using FTP or anyone using the Windows XP Publisher. If
you choose to use the file size options, the file size of the original image
will take precedence over the the display size and any display size is
accepted as long as the file size is less than your choice in the 'Uploading
Options'.

If your mouse cursor becomes a (+) when you mouse over the image, then you need to access that larger image that you uploaded. I always click on the image to get the 100% size that I've uploaded, & then use that URL for display.
