Manfrotto 190CX3 Tripod (external link) by headshotzx (external link), on Flickr

Yes yes. I thought the Manfrotto 190CX3 + Kirk BH-3 setup I have could last me a long time. But I was wrong.

It's a nice setup, but I find that the legs on the 190CX3 are getting too wimpy for the kinds of stuff I put on it (Gripped 5D2, 70-200 etc). The BH-3, well, it moves a fair bit when I want it locked down. Don't know why. I've been doing a fair bit of videos with a 501HDV head on the 190CX3 to and it doesn't work well. Also, the 190CX3 is slightly too short for me.

So what do you guys recommend for an upgrade? I don't use my tripod a lot while hiking (I don't do that), but I don't know, portability might be an issue if I get something like a Gitzo 3531S / 3541S, no?

I'm willing to consider selling the kit I have and getting something more expensive that works for a long time. Been looking at a Gitzo 3531S & Markins Q20 setup for awhile now. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Just move up to the next level of Manfrotto and continue using your same heads for awhile. I have the 3001 series to use with my video head and 3011 with 3028 head for stills. The newer 3011 has adj. leg spread (older ones didn't). Love it. Simple yet sturdy and light.

I tried a Markins Q20 head, with long lenses it moved slightly after framing up the shot, tried the Kirk head too - it also moved. This drove me nuts, I'd get the shot framed the way I wanted and while fighting off mosquitos I'd have to reframe the damn thing allowing for the slight droop. This wasn't a good situation. I talked to a photographer friend in Kalif who had the same problem with the Markins head, he wasn't sure there was a head that didn't do that. I kept trying them and finally ended up with the RRS BH-55, it doesn't move at all.
You can put it on top of whatever legs you find you like.

We had 488RC2 over 0f55proB. We replaced those stacks with RRS 055 over Gitzo 3531S. :D
