So my wife told me that my 15 month old son had somehow gotten his little hands into my [closed] camera bag and pulled the lens caps off the 2 lenses that were in it. When i opened it up, I found that he broke the filter ring on my EF-S 55-200. The thing is just thin plastic and it looks like he must've yanked on the lens filter & lens cap and just cracked the thing. It is broken open (aka, the filter ring is now a broken circle) and is detached from the end of the lens about 1/4 of the way around.

Is there any way to get this fixed, or am I just SOL?

is it the filter on the lens that's busted...or the lens itself...you can always send things in to canon to get fixed...but with the price point on that lens it's probably not worth it...does it still function and is just ugly? if so who really cares

its not the filter. It was a metal filter, and I assume he pulled on the filter/lens cap, which caused the plastic filter ring to break. I haven't tried it yet, but I believe the lens is fully functional from a usage standpoint. The problem is that i can't put filters OR a lens cap on it now, because the broken ring won't hold them anymore.

Did you buy the lens new, and if so, is it still under warranty? If it is (and even if not) it may be worth a call to Canon to find out about getting it fixed. Even though new and used ones are relatively inexpensive, it might still be cheaper to get it fixed.

edit: You've got a really nice Flickr stream. Makes me miss New England.

I seriously doubt that a little tyke pulling on a lens cap could have broken the filter thread ring from the lens. More likely, the front end of the lens took a hit some time back and cracked then.

Though I don't have access to one of those lenses, I suspect it's rather easy to replace the part that has the filter thread ring on it. Call Canon's service center and ask what it would take to repair the lens.

ct1co2 - thanks for the compliment!

SkipD - I see your point. I don't really know how he would be able to just break it off normally. Its possible that the lens took a hit. I bought it used, so I can't say for sure what happened before I owned it. It hasn't since I've had it and I've never noticed anything wrong with it in the year and a halfish that I've had it.

Here are a couple pictures of it:

I don't think you are SOL. I would call Canon and inquire. Even though you'd have to pay out of pocket for it, I don't think that would be all to expensive of a fix.

I believe the label ring around the front of the lens comes off (probably held on with double-sided sticky tape) and then you'd probably remove three screws to remove the front ring. Put a new ring in with the three screws and then re-attach the label ring. I'd order the front ring and the label with its tape and do it myself.

The kid was probably weight lifting with it and drop it. Let him know no more weight lifting until he is 18. Hope you get the lens fixed without to much stress.

Canon will flat rate that like most things. I believe it will be $55 plus shipping to repair.

There's a reason why these are kit lenses. :P

In all seriousness though, for a quarter or so of the price of the lens as new ($200), I wouldn't even bother with sending it in to Canon. As suggested, you can fix it yourself. It is a low end lens and as such these things happen. I, too, think there had to have been some hairline crack in the plastic ring from a previous drop prior to Jr. getting his hands on it.

Skip - where can you even order this stuff from? Can you order replacement parts like this from Canon?
