Didnt the mk iv just came out? With the 3 years product cycle and all.

The 1DS Mk4 isn't even out yet. Pretty sure that Canon is thinking about this one before they will replace the 1D Mk4.

The date (as shipping) is more plausible than most would think.

The 1D product line is on a 3 year cycle. The 1D4 was announced on October 2009 and shipped in late December of the same year.

Apparently we have got irregularities, with the 1Ds Mk3. It looks to me like the 1D Mk5 is also an exception - in no way it is head and shoulders better than the competition, even today. So I guess soon to be updated Nikon D3s forces quite a shorter lifetime on the 1D Mk4. At least I fail completely to see it lasting until the next autumn.

1Ds3 wasnt updated because Nikon did not bother updating the D3X. They both compete directly.

Unless Nikon upgrades the D3S no 1D5 for anyone.

This is why I feel that Nikon should produce better products than Canon so Canon would be forced to get off their lazy bums.

Rumor sites like CR just publish the most frequent rumors they receive even if it has no grounding on established corporate behavior.

Which is absolute rubbish. The 1Ds/1D cameras are in a different league to every other camera Canon make when it comes to AF not least, and also construction, which is why some of us have the need to shoot with them. A full frame replacement is undoubtably imminent given the 1Ds3 had obviously aged a bit in comparison to the 5D2 and 1D4. Are you implying if Nikon announce the replacement to their D3S Canon will instantly begin working on the successor to the 1Ds3. That might take a few years

Canon has a design for the successor on hand before the end of the 3 year product cycle.

As Nikon did not release a D3X successor (product category of full frame high pixel + slow continuous shooting) Canon had no incentive to unnecessarily make the 1Ds3 obsolete.

Now the specs of the "old" 1Ds4 has since been updated to compete with the D3X successor.

Now if Nikon announces updates all their bodies tomorrow expect Canon to make an announcement for all their updated bodies as well a few days later. When I mean a few days I mean within the same business week.

That's why I find the 1D5 and 7D2 rumors so far fetched. Accelerates product cycles and no Nikon equivalent in sight.

Depends on what one defines as imminent, which to me means very very soon and I think that is not about to happen for the next pro level full frame body. From what I can gather it is going to be somewhat of a game changer in design and functionality. I think we are still close to a year away from having this in the market.

Well of course they do. I think they have a wish list from their pro users, product testers and marketing gurus of what will be in the next generation when the current one is announced. Ie when the 1DsMKIV does get announced they will have an idea of where they want to take the 1DsMkV. They would remiss as a corporation if they didn't do this.

While all the manufacturers pay close attention to what the competition is doing they have to draw a line at some point and say this is whta is going to the marketplace. I don't think that Canon is sitting around waiting for the next Nikon and vice versus. They take what they know about the competitive products and build on their own.

I doubt that there is anyone in this forum that knows what is about to happen with the next generations. Even if they did have an in with Canon they are more than likely restricted by an NDA. Those that in the past have said they have an inside contact and make a prediction are just guessing as I haven't very many of them (particularly of this importance) come to fruition. In the end we are all guesstimating and by and large thinking wishfully.
