I picked up a Yashica TL Electro 35mm SLR (for free) and the guy threw in a set of extension tubes with an M42 mount. After a little thinking, I glued the EF mount from my 75-300 onto the Extension tubes (the 75-300 is out of action, has been for 2 months or so) Grabbed some change, and a piece of paper, and had at it.

Not too shabby for a Free setup (actually, it cost me $25, as I bought a 135 f2.8/M42 and a battery for my Minolta SRT)

Its a little soft at the edges, and the composition of the picture sucks, but I was pretty impressed.

Yashinon 50 1.7
Asanuma Ext. Tubes
Canon 300D
F4
1 Sec Shutter

Is there any way to know what size the extension tubes are? they dont say on them.

Neat shot for a DIY setup:)
You may find you get sharper shots with the lens shut down a bit and longer exposure. I was mainly thinking that mirror slap is supposed to cause max grief around 1 sec exposure, but obviously the lens may perform better around F8 anyway.
I used a pentax 50mm on pentax tubes glued to a modded Tmount on my 300D while my macro lens was being repaired and got excellent results shooting around F11.

I did use MLU on the shot, would probably have better results if I frame the dime better, but lighting was an issue, shot this in my living room, which is fairly dim on light, and sat a desk lamp next to the dime (it was a quick shot, more of a 'will it work' shot then anything else)

I'd like to get the shot were the low areas are dark, and the raised areas are bright, how do I do that?

Hi Johnny, I love it when I see things like your M42 to EOS adapter made from spare parts. :D Now that you have the basic settup, you should play with different lighting, objects, and distences. Your Dime shot looks pretty good for a first run at it. ;)

Johny Thunder,
Today my girlfriend found an old camera from here Dad. On it was Yoshinon DS 50mm 1:1.8 lens. I had already a M42 adapter so I can use use this lens in the same way as you have done (except the extension tubes of course). Do you have tips on focusing and exposure (I consider both has to be to done manually)?
Kind regards Rense

Focus has to be done manually, of course, but as far as exposure, you can use either Av to M, take a few test shots, as you'll probably need to dial in some Exposure Compensation, I know with my 50 and 135, I need to underexpose by 1/3 stop, but with my 85, I need to over expose by 2/3 stop.

One thing to be careful of, a lot of M42 lenses have an auto and manual diagphram control (controls the Aperature for stop down metering) you'll need to use it in the manual setting, open the lens all the way to focus, and stop it down for the exposure, its kind of a PITA, but I enjoy the results. If the lens doesnt have the Auto/Manual setting, you may need to use something to press the pin in, I have simply superglued my pin on my 135 in place, it can be broken loose, but it does the trick.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask, and if I wasnt clear on anything, yell at me and ask again! its been a long day, so I may have been a little unclear.
