Two days ago I reported some suspicious behavior to a mod. I'm not 100% sure the person was attempting to scam me, but let's say I am in the very high 90s. As of now the account is still active and I have not heard back from the mod. I'm not really sure what to expect, but is sure seems like others could be getting scammed.

Here are the details:

The username was created three years ago, and made three posts back in 2008. Just recently that same username has made about 30 more posts of the throw-away "nice shot" variety. The person responded to my WTB ad, offering me a pretty good deal. I asked for pics with the username written on scrap of paper in one. I rec'd pics; no username included. The pics were from an eBay auction from earlier this year. You all tell me what you think...

All I can say is please do your homework when buying anything around here. It wasn't hard to sniff this out, but it would've been pretty easy to jump at a good deal too.

I very well may have fallen for it and it's painful to admit that. I'd like to think I'm a reasonably sharp guy.

Thank you for posting up-I can't possibly be the only person to appreciate a friendly reminder.

Have a wheelie nice day!

My rule for buying from anyone responding to my WTB listings is that the member must be established and contribute here and by contribute I don't mean thirty 'me too' posts.

Don't know about the response from the mods, perhaps they're still collecting information.

I have seen them take action on getting rid of scammers, so just give them some time.

Yeah, I know. I just don't like the feeling of a potential scammer still running loose when I feel like I should be doing something about it.

Still no communication back from mods and the user is still an active member.

Did you pay via paypal and did you NOT use gift? Then you should have nothing to worry about, as paypal ALWAYS sides with the buyer and will give you your money back. If you didnt, well then, you took the risk...

The part I bolded is not an accurate statement. The rest is, using PayPal gift/personal to buy merchandise from someone you don't know isn't any different than wiring cash via Western Union.

Did you read the first post? ;)

I didn't buy anything. Just ran across an attempted seller who smelled very much like a scammer. My concern is that others are being scammed and nothing is being done to prevent it.

mods already putting up posts to warn about scammers. might take some time for them to get to your warning. they probably waiting for more ppl to flag the user otherwise it's just he said she said at this point.

I hear you. But the reality is that we are not allowed to self-police, and it doesn't seem like dealing with potential scammers is a major priority. Everything I said in the first post is easy to verify. Nothing "he said/she said" about it.

Have you thought that maybe the mod did not find anything suspicious about the seller? The seller could just be lazy and doesn't want to bother with pictures. In this case just walk away and inform the mod(which you did just that). You can't expect the mod to just ban the guy just because you have a suspicious.
