Normally I don't shoot in portrait orientation but I have a project coming up where I'm going to need to. I really hate to have to drop $180 for a plate I may use one time. I've already done this for the 7D and don't want to have to do it again. Are there any other plates out there worth a look? I've searched around and all I'm coming up with is RRS and Kirk and of course no luck on the various FS forums. This would be for the 1D Mark IV.

dont think you are going to have good luck with this... I looked around for one for my 7D and came up with nothing too... KIRK and RSS.... So I bought the KIRK from B&H, it is very nice...

I can see your point about only using it a few times, I am sure you know that you could always sell it... but that sucks too... because you will lose some money and the pain to sell it.

good luck

That's what I figured but thought I'd throw it out here in case there's some smaller manufacturer out there that I missed. Also need a good quality 77mm CPL so there goes almost $400.

if you wanna try your luck with ebay there's a brand called "Mestos" but its not really cheap either at $150.

or you might wanna check out their UNIVERSAL L-bracket for gripped cameras for $115 w/ free shipping (but need to add $20 for expedited)

w/ out grip for $100

Thanks, I came across those on eBay but the small savings, overseas shipping, and having no idea of their quality tends to make me want to stick with Kirk or RRS. Guess I'll just keep watching the FS forums and if nothing turns up hold my nose and drop the $180 at B&H or Adorama.

as far as I know Mestos is quite good... I was actually considering their universal bracket, a few weeks ago it was like $90 only  now its a bit expensive so I will get RRS myself :)

yeap you are better off watching it on FS, and if you wanna save on shipping I guess you wanna go with Kirk and get it from either of those shops

the RRS ones show up on EBay fairly often, don't know about the Kirk ones because I don't look for them.

Have the RRS for my non-gripped 7D. Yes it was expensive but it lives on my camera and I use it more than I expected. I was trying out some star photography the other night (something I never planned on doing) and it was great as I was switching between portrait and landscape frequently in the dark.

Uhhh, flop your head?? I have the RSS plate for my 7D and because I'm old school I routinely forget I have the L plate and just flop my head to portrait.

Funny you mention that as I do have an L plate for the 7D. I didn't sell it because I have taken an interest in sky shots in the past and figured I'd hang on to it for that.

Not possible. Not all heads are able to be flopped. I need an L plate for this particular project.

The only Canon specific brackets they have are for the 60D. Looks like I'm going to have to go with RRS or Kirk unless I get lucky and find one offered used.

Call BorrowLenses and see if they also have the newer version of this Kirk L-bracket (external link). The newer BL-Mark4 fits more models. If not, see if the one they have will fit a Mark IV since they have them as well.

Kirk (external link) as well as Acratech (external link) also make universal L-brackets.

Thanks. Those universal brackets don't save much so I'd prefer one specifically for the body. The rental idea is perhaps the way to go but I'll have to do it with one of the mail order companies, I know the rental shop here in town doesn't carry them, already checked that.
