Thinking seriously about buying a used ef 28-70 f2.8l USM to replace my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 EX DG HSM. I've read that the 28-70 is sharper lens at all apertures & FL's than the ef 24-70, focuses as fast and is about $400 bucks less expensive, used. I'd be interested in some thoughts & feedback on this. My sigma is a very good lens as long as action isn't fast, but isn't fast enough in lower light situations when I'm trying to track action. There are times when I would like to have that versatile focal range in low light action. I'd love some feedback on this subject.

I haven't ever used or owned a 24-70L, but have owned two 28-70L's and they are terrific lenses.

This is like every other "this lens vs that lens" question in that you'll get a million different resoponses. From reading through all the various postings about these two, what I decided it boiled down to is that with the 28-70L, you are generally getting at least as good a lens as the 24-70L, with the biggest difference being 4mm of focal length. There are enough postings out there stating that the 28-70L is the better lens anyway, but it appears to be at least an equal. Largely depends on whether you get a good copy of the 24-70L or not.

The copy-to-copy variation of the 28-70L doesn't appear to be as great, but that's just what I picked up from reading. Otherwise, you can get a lighter, slightly smaller lens for what may be a significant savings to you by going the route of 28-70L. On the other hand, you can grab a new 24-70L and have warranty coverage, more years of repair service availability through Canon, etc.

I've owned both lenses. Still own the 24-70 and it is a massive improvement above the 28-70 in terms of sharpness and Colour

Interesting reviews, but it is now a moot point. I went to meet the photographer selling the 28-70mm today and it was the 24-70mm for $800. The glass was pristine, the lens functioned perfectly & there was just a light worn area on the metal portion of the zoom ring where she wore the paint from turning the zoom ring. I mentioned to her that she listed it as a 28-70mm in her ad and she said she knew that and it was a typo and she just never went back & changed it. I'm a very lucky and happy guy right now! :D
