What are you looking for? Widest? largest aperture? most expensive? most versatile? Build quality? Cheap?

I absolutely love the Sigma 8-16 on my 7d...

tamron 17-50 2.8
canon 15-85 IS or 17-55 IS
maybe sigma 17-50 OS
(or canon 18-55 IS if you don't want to spend too much on it, it's actually very sharp although the images don't seem to pop quite as much from it for whatever reason, but it is sharp edge to edge)

or if you like super-wide, canon 10-22

for primes:
rokinon/samyang 14mm, some bad distortion but supposed to be very free of CA and insanely sharp, manual focus only though

canon 17mm T&S - fun tricks to play with, MF only again

zeiss 21mm (not really all that wide on APS-C though, so kinda very, very borderline)

When I was shopping for my wide angle lens, I tried out both Sigma 10-20 (not the f3.5) and the Canon 10-22 on my 7D, I personally had a hard time telling the difference, but after doing some search here and looking at some sample pictures people have posted it up, I decided on the Canon.

A lot of people have suggested that unless you plan on using the lens for mainly indoor low light w/o a proper flash, then the tokina would be a good choice, otherwise the IQ is actually better on both the canon and the sigma wide angle lens.

just wanted to say that 1mm in wide angle lenses (especially in the lower end) makes so much more difference.

learning hard!

Tokina 11-16 gets my vote. ~20mm just isn't that wide on an APS-C body.

Do you want an ultra wide or a wide angle as you put in your title?

For outdoors, canon 10-22, for indoors, tokina 11-16.

AFAIK the Tokina 11-16 is overall the best one. The Sigma 8-16 is the widest one. The Canon 10-22 is the least flare prone UWA I can think of. The Sigma 10-20 (not the F3.5 one) and the Tamron 10-24 have the best price/performance ratios, the Sigma is sharper in the corners, has a better autofocus motor(though that's largely irrelevant on UWA-s), is better built, and has fewer problems with CA, but the Tamron distorts less on the wide end.
Truth be told, you'd probably be satisfied with ANY of these lenses.
If you want future FF compatibilty, you could go for the Sigma 12-24, but as mentioned before, a 1-2mm difference on the wide end makes a HUGE difference on UWAs, in terms of how wide they go, so the 12-24 wouldn't be THAT wide on your 7D, however it'd be even wider on FF than the 8-16 would be on your 7D.

A good photographer can take extraordinary photos anywhere, with any camera and any lens while a mediocre one will take mediocre ones everywhere, with every camera and every lens.
Never limit yourself with what others think you should do. Shoot what you find interesting, exactly the way you want to.

Theres basically 3 choices IMHO

Need something cheap? Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, Great lens, very sharp, pretty flare resistant and able to be found in the $300 neighborhood

Need something fast? Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, Great lens overall, great build, a bit hard to find in stock though last time i checked

Dont need speed? Then the Sigma 8-16, The point of a UWA is to get wide, and there is not a single lens out there thats wider, And its sharp, And its flare resistant...
