How did you get your first model?

I stumbled upon a portfolio of one photographer she has done a lot of model photo shoots. I am talking not models - super models but models like everyday people babies, kids, seniors, males, females.

How does one get models? Contact a model agency? Ask for rates? Doesn't it cost arm and a leg? What would be an alternative without spending a fortune?

I don't have a studio so would have to be a public place.

Friends and family! Even if they don't want to have their pictures taken, I'm sure they know someone that does!

Just ask people you see if you can take some pictures of them. I found my first few models on the bus, in the supermarket, walking in town etc., etc. Just had some cards printed up and simply asked them if they would be interested and gave them a card. Some people got in touch, some didn't, but I never had a bad reaction and met some good models that way.

That was back in the 1980s, these days we have the internet and there are many thousands of guys & girls on there looking to be a model. Sign up on one of the modelling sites and put up a few shots to show you can handle a camera and you will find models happy to work "TFP" or "TFCD", where no money changes hands and you simply give the model prints or just a CD with the images on for their portfolio.

The catch 22 there, of course, is that you need some people shots to start your own portfolio and show that you can take a nice shot. However, you can start with some simple portraits of friends or relatives, they don't have to be 'models'.

Thanks Sandpiper. Yeah when I was asking about models, I meant just peeps to photograph not super models /body builder type of people. Thanks.

Ok so re-read and see that you're married. Start taking shots of the spouse and I'm sure they have friends (possibly with kids) and go from there. Some of the more confident members on here have even done a strangers project just walking aobut downtown and asking random people to take a picture which has been pretty effective.

I beg, borrow and steal (ok not really) my friends, their kids, and my friends' friends and their kids. If you are looking for real fashion models, try joining a few photography groups on meetup.com, if there are any in your area. They often have workshops with real, live, actual models (as opposed to real, live, actual family :D )

My wife is friends with the dancers in a local burlesque dance troupe, so I have easy and free access to several hot girls who don't mind TFCD modeling.

</end shameless brag>
