During the migration westward, crossing the Arizona desert was a lot of work. The oxen would pull the wagon until you reached an arroyo. Then, you had to get out the shovel, dig a ramp down, and dig another ramp up. Then, the oxen would pull the wagon until you reached the next arroyo, often only a few hundred yards away.

For one poor slob, this went on for months and months. One day he reached the edge of the Grand Canyon, whereupon he promptly said, "California be damned, Maude! We're settling here!"
