I have a question about the whole RPN thing, what signifies that you are calculating the square root? I see a two randomly thrown in there... but that's it.

That's what I get for doing it on paper instead of actually using a calculator.

Actually performing the operation involved on my HP 33s, the correct sequence is:

[2] [2] [.] [5] [x²] : Enters 22.5 (sensor long dimension) and squares it. X = 22.5² = 506.25.
[1] [5] [x²] : Enters 15 (sensor short dimension) and squares it. X = 15² = 225; Y = 22.5² = 506.25.
[+] : Adds X and Y. X = (22.5² + 15²) = 731.25.
[Sqrt] : Takes square root of X. X = sqrt(22.5² + 15²) = 27.04..., which is sensor diagonal.
[8] [5] [enter] : Enters 85 (lens focal length). X = 85; Y = sqrt(22.5² + 15²) = 27.04....
[2] [×] : Multiplies X by 2. X = (2 × 85) = 170; Y = sqrt(22.5² + 15²) = 27.04....
[÷] : Divides X into Y. X = (sqrt(22.5² + 15²) / (2 × 85)) = 0.159....
[atan] : Takes arctan of X. X = 9.038... (lens half angle).
[2] [×] : Multiplies X by 2. X = 18.076..., diagonal angle of view of 85mm lens when used with a 30D (22.5×15.0mm sensor).

Very simple, really.

Notice that at no time were more than two stack registers used. Even the most complicated equations can be solved with no more than four stack registers, which even simple RPN calculators have (called X, Y, Z, and T). The HP 50g has many more.

Also notice that at no time was it necessary for me to remember or store an intermediate value. The stack takes care of all that stuff automatically.

Crappy calculator talk is killing the thread  :D:D

Maybe that's because you use a crappy calculator.

Besides, if you don't like it, you may consider it a learning experience. You can learn how I (and many others) feel when you guys talk about guns, or bikes, or Manchester United, etc.

Ok, that makes much more sense. The lack of a square root function threw me off. Thanks for the explanation. I can definitely see the attractiveness to RPN, in longer equations parentheses always get out of control.

Happens to me when creating complicated formulas in excel

Yeah... at least Excel helps some by color coding things, but it can still get out of hand pretty quickly.
