What's the mirror behind the mirror?


Lifting the mirror manually by hand reveals another slightly smaller mirror-like thing that lifts with it. When the mirror is fully lifted, the rear mirror has caught up with it and rests tightly against it.

What do each of these two mirrors do?

Hilariously: the sub-mirror :lol:.

The main mirror directs light into the viewfinder so the camera can meter and you can see what you are shooting. The sub-mirror directs some of the light downwards into the AF sensors, so the camera can autofocus.
