I want to buy a studio kit and I am looking at the Elinchrom D-Lite 4 To Go Kit. Budget is a bit tight and this lloks like something of good quality.
How was your experience with this kit and will you reccomend this? I am planning to use this on weddings, model shoots and family.

I got the bx-ri kit and the stands and softboxes were mediocre. In retrospect, I would rather have just bought the monolights and gotten my own stands for the $300 difference.

Make sure you buy the "IT" designated kit and you´ll be fine.

The "non-IT" kit does not include an Skyport transmitter that let´s you fire the strobes wirelessly and the tripod mount is knon to be weaker. A few retailers might still have some of those in stock.

Cheers, Zwicko

The softboxes aren't so great, everything else is fine. It's a good deal if you need the bags, otherwise buy the lights separately (~$600) and get your own stands and reflectors.

Or just buy the kit and try to sell off what you don't need, if you can deal with the hassle. I doubt you'll be able to sell the cases, though.

And yeah, make sure to get the D-lite 4 it. Added built-in Skyport triggers and some other improvements.

Thx alot for the feedback. I can get the IT kit for $1400(R10 500 here in South Africa). It does include the skyport. There is just so many different makes on the market, Some 400w lights cost half the price of the Elinchrom, then again I susspect the quality will be half as well.

A friend of mine bought that kit and he told me the stands are pretty lousy (and I played with them so-so non heavy duty stands), he ended up buying heavy duty stands, he is really happy with the monolights, softboxes and radio trigger though.

The original poster says he's in South Africa, so I'll direct this bit of into to the USA folks..

According to the Adorama listing, you can get a D-Lite 4 IT system for $807. The specifications says the kit comes with two 367B stands.. I believe those are Manfrotto stands. I have seen listings for Manfrotto 367B stands.

Perhaps the stands are very basic, but Manfrotto does produce quality stands. Adorama has priced the 367B stands at $64.46...

I'm seriously thinking about getting a D-Lite 4 system after the first of the year, when my budget will allow it.

I'm in the market for some lighting to, but in my opinion I'd save a little longer and buy the moonlight 500 bxri with ability to adjust the lights from your camera remote. Now if you have to raise or lower the light your not moving the stands etc. I almost bought the set your talking about, but after attending a Kelby's class, I was able to see his point of changing functions with out disturbing the model etc

Just a heads up the USA kit and EU kit are different. I dont know what is in the SA kit. but yes the USA stands are not awesome, good but not great

They start to bow when I put my BIG modifiers on. Dlite is a great kit

Eh I really dont use that function. I am 6*3 and can reach up and get the light 99% of the time not a big deal. If you are adjusting while the model is there, you are doing something wrong. I get set up before the model is shot :D If I am up on a scissor lift and am not ready then there is bigger problems
Metering to get the ratio/exposure and I have a stand in/ assistant with similar hair / skin. I am ready to go when they are on set.

6' 2" or not, when the light is mounted high on a boom it sure is nice to remotely adjust power. I have the Dlite kits, both 2 and 4. The manfrotto stands are adequate, but not ideal for large modifiers. I have other heavy duty stands I carry instead. The kit stands are for studio and support the BG lights just fine for me. I wouldn't bother trying to sell the bags off, they make a nice shipping case when you sell off the IT kit and but a BXri set, or the Rx set later on. Elinchrom has a nice upgrade path if you feel you need it. I've never regretted my Eli purchases.

Are there any battery packs that are suitable for the D-lites?

Yes. invotronix makes one. I use a back up UPS for mine.

The Innovatronix Explorer Mini and soon to be released XT3 work well with the D-Lite it
