I've decided these are stupid names for lenses. Why name them at all?

SUMMICRON, SUMMILUX, ELMAR, NOCTILUX, ELMARIT, SUMMARIT, HEKTOR, SUMMARON

"yeah..I was out shooting with my HEKTOR...and what a fine piece of glass that is..."

I'm glad Canon hasn't officially named every one of their lenses..

I can tolerate "nifty fifty & dust pump." But Elmarit? WTH is that?

Have you considered that they might be foreign names?

Those names are badges of honor.
When, for example, you mention Noctilux in photographic circles, peoples eyes start lighting up.

See, I'd rather have lenses with actual names like "Summilux" instead of stupid nicknames like "Sigmalux", "The Brick" and "The Magic Drainpipe".

so if you're foreign, naming the lens is cool? As far as I know, every photo equipment we buy in the US is foreign...contributing to our trade deficit.

Imagine how many names Canon and Nikon will have to come up with...

What would you call 300mm 2.8 vs 400mm 2.8?

A name is a name, foreign or otherwise...

Maybe you should start up your own camera brand and manufacturing...

WTH is a Magic Drainpipe?

It's a stupid nickname for a nice lens - the Canon EF 80-200mm f/2.8L
