Does anyone have samples from the 70-300L with kenko 1.4x TC?

I'm considering getting the Kenko PRO 300 DGX teleconverter for use on my 70-300mm f/4-5.6L just for reaching small birds. I've heard that it fits, and works, and with some little trick of masking off one of the pins you can trick the camera into not knowing you're at f/8 wide open and it will sometimes be able to AF in bright daylight (though I expect to manually focus).

But what I can't find are any example shots from this combo. I'd love to see some full-res shots or 100% crops especially. Thanks!

me three

(I'm getting a bad feeling this may go on "me four", "me five" until we have ended up adding the entire ownership of this lens to the list and not a one with a kenko 1.4 hah)

I'm pretty sure that is not a 100% crop and re-sizing 10-18MP down to like 1/4MP makes anything look sharp as heck. SO I don't think that really tells one anything at all. (if it actually is a 100% that would be insane though, but I really doubt it could be)

doesn't look that bad, although the NR+sharpening making it a little hard to judge
but it hints that it does do better than upscaling would

My AF works without masking any pins off. Anyone else?? Hunts a bit, close-up, but only on difficult subjects. Yes it's slightly better than cropping & enlarging, but not a lot.

I've never seen a TC combo that is worse than upscaling, once you process both shots.

Does the 70-300L even have the pins to mate up with the TC? If Canon haven't stated that it's compatible with TCs then it probably wont have the pins and therefore there is no need to tape the pins. It also means that it wont report the correct aperture and focal length, unless you're using a Kenko DGX TC (I'm not sure there are any others that do this).

It's the current Kenko - er Pro 300 DGX. It's got 5 + the 3 power pins on the back and more on the front - more than the lens!
The camera reads the aperture right ( ie adds a stop) and gets the FL right too.

Oh yep that's a feature of the new Kenko DGX TCs. They seem to intercept the data such that AF keeps working but the final EXIF data is correct. Quite handy indeed, I use one on my 400 F/5.6 a fair bit.

Here's a pic at 300mm f/5.6, 600D. Only the center box is in focus. DOF is ridiculously shallow. I think that's OK, if I'm using it for a bird in a tree I'll only need the middle anyway :)

I actually found 2x TC III was worse than uspcaling, on 135 f/2, kinda surprised me (maybe if you stopped, way, way, WAYYYYYY down it would be different)

i can't imagine the 1.4x would do ,much for the old 75-300 IS, etc.
