So my photography has progressed enough that I have got some attention and a local mag wants to give me a shot at a shoot.

The assignment is a local (outdoor) entertainment venue manager and the mag has asked for a vertical shot of the mgr on stage and sitting in the seating section of the venue.

The theater is a large venue, major concerts go on there and the person is well known about Kansas City, so of course I am feeling a bit of pressure with this 1st assigment.

One of my greatest delimas is that the guy is only available during the harsh mid day sun when shawdows will be strong and his skin will be sweaty. Does anyone has any advice in deealing with these issues. I thought sunshade but sadly I will not have an assistant to hold any shade devices, perhaps gaffers tape, light stand pole and clamp may work for me that day?

Words of advice will be well recieved, anything from light issues, dealing with hot temps to posing would be awesome.
Thank you
Joe

If you can't do anything about the direct sunlight, use fill flash to temper the harsh shadows.

As for the guy being sweaty, permit me to suggest a towel...

;)

The best solution is a sunshade such as a large shoot through umbrella held by an assistant. Without an assistant you may be able to use it on a lightstand, but its much harder.

thanks for the tips everyone, I will use my parachute rigging skills and build (sew) a larger sunshade this weekend before the photo shoot, it's nice having a full riggng loft that can also build stuff like soft boxes and sunshades.

It may be a dumb question but, I AM a noob. How did you get "discovered"? I mean, I'm not to that point yet but I do post my best pictures and stuff to my website. But, that doesn't really get many hits that I know of. So, how did you get discovered Joe?

Also, congrats!!

Spider87.. well I have always beleieved that if you want something you can either be the best at it and word will get out to the people seeking your talent (in any thing you do) or you can be a go gitter.
I am a go gitter, when i was young I pursed factory sponsorship in skateboarding, I was hungry for it and made myself persistant, available and did what ever it took to be better then the next kid wanting the same thing even if I was not as talented as that kid I just offered more then the next guy.
I carried that through to later being a professional skydiver with factory sponsors and now with photography I go after it hard and heavy.
I submit photos to magazines all the time, most of the mags have submission guidelines and it is just a matter of doing it time and time again until you get a photo they like.
With this local mag I did not see a submission policy so i asked and then just followed the steps, oh and was persistant in talking with the director and he finally threw me an intro job to see if he likes my work.
I also have been sending out info to real estate companys, if I can push a shutter button and get paid i am doing it, well just today I landed a one time shoot with a real estate company asking for head shots, I was suprised as I though they would ask for house photos, either way the gig pays and I am building my name.
So my advice is to be positive, don't sell yourself short or over book yourself and go after it hard, devote an hour a day or more to going after photo shoots or selling to photos, be persistant but not a pest.. smile the whole time you are emailing, talking or licking stamps, it will keep everything positive!
Joe

I started this thread back in August and I was pumped up about getting my 1st paying gig with a magazine, well it turns out that I must have done something right because they have asked me to shoot for the Nov issue!

Presumably they used the shots in the last issue (September)... can you show 'em?
