Sigma 17-50 2.8

I have been on the lookout for one in the marketplace section and I have not been able to see one. How come? Is it generally because owners are very happy with it that they do not want to part with it?

If you think that it is on par with the Tammy or the Canon in that optical range, why we see plenty of then in the for sale section?

Maybe the sigma lens does not sell in the same quantity as the Canon and the Tamron one?

Given that it could be seen as a cheaper replacement for the Canon 17-50, I am thinking that there is a healthy amount of purchases of this sale.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

T2i - 18-55IS, Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 50-250 IS

1) Sigma is much newer lens (released last year; Tamron and Canon have been around for many years).
2) Probably because of the Japan earthquake, stocks were very limited this year.
3) It is a nice lens.

6D (normal), 6D (full spectrum), Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC, 135L, 70-200 f4L, 50mm f1.8 STM, Samyang 8mm fisheye, home studio, Fast Stacker

I ordered mine new back in May and had to wait ~3 weeks because it was OOS. It's a new lens, great quality, so people are not in a rush to part with their lenses. Even the ones I've seen for sale were posted for $6XX, so not like one could save a significant amount of money by getting a used copy.

If most owners are like me, they find it to be a lens they will not part with unless it breaks or you decide to go FF.

Sure you see lots of the non-VC Tamron listed. But I don't see that many of the VC version listed, also probably because it's a newer lens.

As for the 17-55, I'd bet it's usually because the owner is moving to FF or switching to primes.

I gave up waiting for a good deal, either used or new and ordered one from B&H. It will be here tomorrow. Considering how everyone compares it to the Canon 17-55, even at $669 it should be a good buy.

I will probably keep this lens even when I go full frame (to keep on my back-up camera, which will probably be my current crop body).

I really like this lens.

My guess is that this lens is still new-ish and so not much stock for resale (or for sale brand new for that matter).

I had this exact same issue with mine. I'm awaiting my replacement which should be here next week. Anybody here have backfocusing issues with this lens? It seems apparent at f2.8 and using the outer focus points.

just testes mine @ f/2.8 in 21-35mm range...photos look good, not noticing any mis-focusing.

It's hard to tell on the LCD screen. I went through a whole photoshoot and 50 percent of my photos were ruined due to the backfocusing. It's hard to see on the LCD screen.

But if it isn't missing focus, then that's good news. How old is your lens?

I've looked on a 23" LCD screen :) Was using outer AF points on my 50D. I've received the lens in mid-June, so it's 2 month old.

Here's a sample shot, the rest is in line with this:

28mm, f/2.8, ISO 800, 1/60s

I did a lot of research on this lens prior to buying it. I neither discovered any major issues with focusing on this lens from my extensive research, nor have I experienced any in the three weeks that I've owned it so far. The only "misfocusing" I've experienced is because the IS is so good on this lens that sometimes I forget I'm shooting at such low shutter speeds and get lazy with my shots :P There are bad eggs in all product manufacturing processes, but there's no reason to harp on it and cross post about it.

As for the OP, I've also noticed not many of these are going used yet and the few that have go for over $600. It's probably because this lens really hits a sweet spot for price/performance between the excellent-but-cheap Tamron and the excellent-but-overpriced-and-has-issues Canon. But it's also because it's very new compared to the others. It also helps that it's built like a brick and comes with a 4 year warranty.
