On many web sites, especially those of car manufacturers, one sees a picture of a product (a car, for instance) on which you can click and drag and see all round the object from any angle. Can someone explain to me, purely out of interest, how these pictures are taken? Thanks.

Thanks for all the quick responses folks. However, they all seem to be concerned with panos, whereas what I am enquiring about is more like this http://www.lexus.co.uk …spx#/spin/group_hybrid/CT (external link)

And that is interactive graphics created using Adobe Flash.

Thanks Tim. Can you explain how it is done - or shall I try and Google it?

There are a number of ways it can be done, either with video or multiple pictures taken from every angle. Then you need the right software to compile it all into an interactive flash. You can find the information on Flash Software at Adobe.com and videos how to work with the software at Adobe TV.

There is a twist to this story. As a 3d artist i have worked with producing ads similar to what you have asked for here and what we do is we build a full detailed 3d model of the product in question and then we have a artificial studiosetup in the applications we work with where the place the model, render out the individual frames of the product rotating 360 degrees and then assemble them in external applications. Often this is the case for products you see and can interact with online as it allows you as the artist to have full control of everything the viewer will then see on their screens at home.

I could see how a model could be made of a car, but I have seen articles of clothing on web sites that allow the same click and drag rotational view. Am I correct in assuming you would then take hundreds (thousands?) of images of the actual car from every angle and then assemble them in Adobe Flash?

(Incidentally, in the car example, do you think that they would necessarily make a model of the car, or photograph the real thing!)

I believe when he is saying that he builds a 3D model of the object he doesn't mean a physical model but instead a computer generated 3D model.

Would that apply to, say, cars and dresses?
