Checking my rewards points at bestbuy and the 50 dollars off I could pick up my 1st external flash for about 90 bucks. I would really like add a flash to my gear without breaking the bank and having the wife chew me out.

I have seen many people selling their 430ex II lately and wanted to know is there something I am missing? I would love the 580, but I dont think mama would let me spend the extra money.

Nothing wrong with the 430. Great flash to start out with.

I just got one myself and chose it over the 580 due to cost and the smaller size. It s perfect for me as I am new to dslr and definately new to flash photography.

In the end, I opted to go with the 430 EX II and have never regretted it. I use it off camera almost all of the time either in a makeshift soft box, or undiffused on a tripod.

Perhaps one day I may find that I need the 580’s extra power; until then I will be working on upgrading my lenses.

IMO, if you have the 7D, 60D, or T3i, the 580EXII is unnecessary. Those bodies include built-in wireless control of off-camera flash, which is one of the 580EXII's main selling points.
