Don't get me wrong, Lensrentals.com is one of the best sites/services on the entire web, truly firsts-class, but I just spit out my morning coffee when I noticed that they let you rent THE CHESS SET!!!

When I saw the CHESS picture a few weeks ago, I just thought it was a photographic exercise/joke on their part to show off the the breadth of their inventory!!!

Rental prices START at $6916, excluding shipping lol! (external link)

So, who is in?

I found this little excerpt more amusing. $150k to buy the set? Please someone gift this to me :D

"Please note: If after renting the Lensrentals Chess Set you decide you just have to have one of your very own (or perhaps need a gift for that special photographer in your life), they are available for purchase for $151,202.17. But move quickly, this won’t last long at this price. Once the Canon Mk II Supertelephoto lenses are released the price will increase substantially."

Don't forget that if you buy the set before September 1st they'll throw in a free t-shirt, a $13 value!

The real funniest part is I put that page up late one night. And waited. And waited.

It was two days before the accounting people noticed and if you think YOU spit your coffee you should have seen them. :-) You could hear the scream from the offices to the warehouse: "Roger this time you've gone to far! Do you guys see what he did?"

I said "What? You don't think we should throw in the T shirt?"

I should have waited until April 1st, but that was so far away. . . . and patience just isn't my strong point.

Sure it's all fun and games until someone wants to buy the set, then you're all out of inventory. :D

Yeah, I wondered about that.

How many times could Bill Gates order the CHESS SET for his home before Lensrentals had nothing left to rent?

Perhaps a better T-Shirt:

"My lens collection cost more than your Ferrari."

You know, Roger, it might not be a bad idea to set up a "Retail Fanboy" section on your website, selling those lens mugs and pillows we've seen lately. I mean, these are the only lenses you don't have, right?

Just a marketing ploy. Cost of black & white tiles and their name is now posted on at least 3 different forums I belong to and several others that I don't:

Very creative idea and use of the internet to promote their company for free.

Well, if they buy it, we wouldn't be out for for very long :D

Truth is superteles are so seasonal (especially now with the shuttle launches done) we'd probably welcome the rental. Not that I expect it to happen. But you never know.
