If, say, on September 19, Canon announces some new goodies, how many of you would immediately pre-order ONE of the following TWO options?

OPTION 1
Canon EF 24-70 2.8L II
Improved coatings/optics, similar weight
Price: $1799.00 (About $80 more expensive than the Nikon)

OPTION 2
Canon EF 24-70 2.8L IS
IS+Improved coatings/optics, more weight
Price: $2299.00 (About $100 less expensive than the 70-200 2.8L IS II)

Personally, I wouldn't buy either for even half of that price. Never seemed all that attractive to me. Supposedly they applied for a patent for a new 24-105. THAT I could sink my teeth into...

I probably would not, but wait for everybody to buy them and eventually sell them. Or wait for a 15% refurb sale through Canon. My 24-105 suits me just fine for now!

I wish Canon would compete with Sigma, and develop a 12-24mm for FF... That would be nice.

I would be interested in Option 1 since I have no need for IS in a lens with that range. I would not pre order, though, until there were some credible reviews out there to help make a more informed decision.

what about less weight? tamron weighs like 1/3 and optics seem to be as good as current beast

I don't live in a hypothetical world, I order lenses after I've seen official press releases, prices and test pictures. :)

A new and improved 24-70 is high on the wish list though. IS I could live without in this lens.

Hmm, I'd probably never pre-order a lens. I buy used as is.
And I'm not one of those people that itch for the newest and greatest.
I've been interested in a 24-70, but not exactly planning on emptying my pockets for a lens.

I don't think I would go for a new 24-70 (either of the options above), they're too expensive for my taste. I might get a new 24-105 to replace mine if the improvements were good enough, though.

i think SchnellerGT would preorder them. i don't see myself ever upgrading the 24-70. the picture qualities are awesome, and never needed/wanted IS.

I wouldn't buy either one because I just don't see the need to upgrade from the 24-70 I use now. It's excellent and they'd have to show me some dramatic improvements to justify the expense.

I don't need I.S. on a 24-70, either... Certainly not at a $1000 premium over what the current 24-70 sells for. Don't need it on 24-70 any more than I need it on a 100mm macro lens or a 17-55 EF-S lens. That's even though I've used IS for ten years, swear by it, love what it can for me, and think it's the best thing since sliced bread on longer teles (70-200, two diff. 300mm's and a 500mm).
