I have fallen in love with my Canon Nifty Fifty and I'd like to get another good prime (or two). Are there any other great bargains out there that are similar? I'd like to get something wider and something more of a telephoto. I am using a T2i so the 50 is a little bit too tight for some occasions. I'd also like a good telephoto to use to get good photos of the kids on stage or playing sports, etc. Thanks for the suggestions.

Which one is the 'nifty fifty'?

If you mean the 50/1.8, then you are going to find that wider and longer primes like the 28/1.8 or 85/1.8 cost 3X as much. I can't think of anything else worth owning that is as cheap as the 50/1.8.

That's the one. I knew I would have to pay $3-400 for something else.

The sigma 30 1.4 is a no brainer if you want something a bit wider.

For a telephoto, either the canon 85 1.8 or 135 f2

If you already have the 50, I say get the 135 :)

Yeah,, I have a 135L and on occasions team it up with my Tamron SP 1.4x TC (white model) with fabulous results.

First pic with the 135L wide open..

got rid of my nifty, and replaced with canon 28 1.8 and 85 1.8.. i'm considering the 50 1.4, but the 1.8 was a toy and the AF was atrocious.

I'd probably say Sigma 30 if you're going wider. Moderately affordable and everyone seems to like it. I am looking into getting one soon myself.

Alternatively, if you have an existing telephoto zoom lens (like the 55-250 or something like that), getting a prime that's a fair amount faster would really make longer distance low-light (graduation ceremony/on-stage) much better. I got stuck sitting quite far in the back at a graduation ceremony recently and had trouble getting many keepers with my 55-250 @250 and slow shutter speeds.

Why no mention of the Canon 100mm f/2?

Sigma 30 f/1.4 or Canon 28mm f/1.8 on the wider end

The only thing i didnt like on the Sigma was the fact its minimum focus distance is VERY far, and thus has a poor maximum magnification, i had some problems with it because the composition i desired was too close to the lens

I ended up getting a Canon 28mm f/1.8 and while its not QUITE as good as the Sigma, its a very good second...

I love my Sigma 30. It's affordable and it feels quite a lot wider than the 50 imo. For tele, 135L might be out of your budget, so consider 85 1.8 or 100 2.0

Nice less expensive wide prime is Canon 35mm f2. Sharp wide open and crazy mft. Longer would be Canon 85mm 1.8.

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!
