My "gear list" is in my sig so you can see what I'm working with. I am thinking of selling my 24-105 and my 50/1.4 and buying an 85LII instead.

Does anyone think this is not a good idea? I know you will ask what kind of shooting I do, but I don't really know. All kinds, I guess. I hardly ever use the 24-105 (ie. never), the 50 is ALWAYS on my 5D, the 70-300 is ALWAYS on my 7D, and the 17-40 is used when needed....

Basically I use the cameras as intended, 7D for action and 5D for all else. I assume the 85 would stay on the 5D as much as the 50....

Open to experiences, advice, etc....

Also, I could do a 50L instead of the 85L....depending on focal length recommendations here.....

It sounds to me like you may have a lot to learn about photographic composition. Try learning about perspective and controlling that by finding the best place for the camera BEFORE selecting a focal length to use. You can, potentially, make some significant improvements in your images. Do this before selling off the lenses, of course. ;)

Please read our "sticky" (found in the General Photography Talk forum) tutorial titled Perspective Control in Images - Focal Length or Distance?.

I agree, but Im not sure what to replace them with. I've become a little L fiend and it's either the 85 or 50 unless there is a more suitable replacement for the two that will leave.

I will always be learning of course. Given how much the 50 stays on my camera, I am starting to consider the 50L.....The indecision is more due to lack of experience with the two regarding build, focus, CA, etc. Not composition differences. They are both primes so I will expect to move my body vs a zoom.
