Have a Rebel XS, would a 30D be an upgrade?

Hi everyone.

I have been shooting for awhile (mostly film) and bought myself an XS a few months ago. Well I have started to like digital more and more. I have been getting into shooting wakeboarding, and have been wanting a higher shutter speed camera. So, is buying a 30D worth it considering:

-cons-
IIt has 2 less megapixels (is this a big deal?)

-pros-
2 fps more.
Faster shutter speed
More rugged
etc.

Thanks for any input, much appreciated :)

is $300 your budget?

reason I ask, is you can get a cheap broken canon camera from ebay or craigslist, and use it towards Canon's loyalty program.

Canon 50D body only- $562.69

you can check out the link with info about the program here, as well as the list of cameras currently available.

I've never owned a 20D or 30D, so I'm not sure what major differences there might be...but there is a 20D on the sell thread for $220

I think a 30D would be a better option than an XS. mostly bcause of the build and capabilities. 2MP isn't all that impacting.

heck, sometimes if you watch closely, you can find a 40D for around $400 in the sell thread.

another con of the 20D/30D series is lack of sensor cleaning and small LCD window.

Ummmm - the XS and T3i have the same maximum shutter speed of 1/4000. I don't see how you are addressing your requirements here.

Mind you, I don't see why 1/4000 isn't adequate in the first place, so maybe I'm missing something.

He T3i is what, $850?

Could have gotten a 50D win 28-135mm usm is lens for $665 through the CLP, and had some cash leftover to put towards another lens or flash.

The 50D fits your criteria of more rugged and faster fps mores than the T3i. But in any case, glad you found something you are happy with. Congrats on your new purchase :-)
