I've noticed lately that I've been getting trigger happy and just clicking the shutter without a whole lot of thought. When I look through the viewfinder, I'm finding that I'm not paying attention to the little details like how this gals sleeves are scrunched up her armpits. There are 10 of her like that. Every session I have, I do something like this. I find that when I nitpick during the shoot, either I loose interest or the client does. Anyone else have this problem?

I do it all the time. It's amazing what you see in the picture after the fact that you don't catch at all during a shoot. I think this just comes with practice.

You really have to be intentional on the detail stuff. Like once you have your lighting right, your pose thought out and nailed down. Before you even get behind the camera, you have to stand back, while your model/subject is still 'waiting to go', and say to yourself:

Is her hair right? (Hold up a hand mirror, let her/him check if you must.)
Is there stray light hitting her somewhere?
Are there any bra straps showing?
Is the clasp on her necklace in the wrong place?
Is her engagement wedding ring crooked (engagement shoots etc.)
Is there broccoli in her teeth? Mascara clumps? WHATEVER, (insert nitpicky detail HERE) the point is, you have to be INTENTIONAL about looking for the nitpicky stuff because the devil really is in the details and it is much better to find those things FIRST. Don't start shooting and tweaking and shooting and tweaking if you can avoid it because it interrupts the flow of your work. You want to avoid getting your model warmed up and smiling naturally to stop to fix something you "just noticed." Be intentional about looking for those things and fixing them before you get behind the camera.

This is exactly what my problem is! Right on the head! If I start shooting, then realize something is amiss, after I fix the problem the subject usually isn't in the same jovial mood as before. I need to really work on this. But every time I get behind the camera I guess I get excited and just start clicking

It drives me nuts sometimes! Like on here, I can give C&C on others photos. But I always catch myself making the same mistakes after I upload the photos. Do'h!

time to hire an assistant. Last summer/fall I did several kids' senior pics. After coming home with a set that include a wardrobe malfunction of some sort in just about every shot, my wife took on this role for me. She was the one to double check hair, shirt sleeves, etc.

Sometimes just a case of not being able to do everything all at once every time.

We started this with the intention of a nice portrait for the department she works on. This picture was sort of a candid that so happened to come from that 5 minute session. I have a few of her but all of them have the scrunched arm pits. Even the keeper that's hanging on the wall.
