an 85mm 1.4 Sigma.

What are your thoughts on the switch ? Is there much of a difference when shooting both at 1.4 and up ? I've heard that the AF on the Sigma is much better. Significant difference in IQ ? Let me know

I've been thinking about parting with my Canon to pick up a Sigma and use the $ remainder towards getting a Canon 35mm 1.4. Just want to hear what are peoples thoughts about the Sigma version over the Canon.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Did the opposite- tried 2 copies of the Sigma and finally settled on the 85 L II. I would keep what you have and save up for the 35 L. If I were you, I would part with the 50L and get the 35 L.

I own the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and bought it for use on a full frame 5D MkII. I am very happy with it and use it for portraits. I just could that was as much as I wanted to spend since I could also include the sigma + 135mm f/2L for the cost of 85L. And I love the 135 when there's room to use it. It's probably my favorite.

I've been wondering the same. I hear the sigma 85 takes shots just as great as the 85L when u get a good copy but lots of folks had to play the exchange game once or twice. Id like to pick up a sigma 85 and use the left over cash towards a 16-35 or 35L. Buying refurb makes it a little better but not by much.

I've rented/borrowed the 85L many times - it's a great piece of glass, one that I wanted to add to my collection.
Then when the Sig85 was announced, I still wanted the 85L but decided I would wait until some hands-on reviews came out. Then they slowly started coming out, and it was enough to get me to buy one. I wasn't sure if I was buying it to keep it, or buying it as a stepping stone to the 85L...

Now I don't think I'll ever sell it...

I had focusing issues on both copies of the Sigma and the exposure never seemed quite right (under exposed). The Canon 85 L II is also much sharper at f1.4 and AF is right on.

I am going the other way. I just took advantage of the current round of instant rebates by Canon and ordered the 50L and 85L II to replace my Sigma 50 and 85. I should have went that route to begin with but I was lured in by the cheaper prices. Right now my older Canon 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 put the Sigmas to shame so I am hoping the new L's to be that much better. Are they going to be worth 2-3 times the price? I'll know next week when they arrive.

Good link.

This reminds me of the 50MM debates. You either want the 'look' of the L result, or not. If not, you can save thousands.

Definitely is. Perhaps I should rent the 1.4 and see if it fits in comfortably with my desires within usability.

I have read the article many times and looked at his website and I do not see where he had or was comparing the mark II 85L. All that I see mentioned is 85L but maybe I overlooked it. I have had the Sigma 85 for nearly a year and I am not as impressed with Sigmas HSM as he seems to be. I have owned 7 Sigmas with HSM and they all exhibit the same behavior. Sigmas HSM chatters when focusing, is a bit noisier and slower than Canons USM and seems to have trouble locking focus on near or far objects when they overlap each other. My Canon lenses will either choose one object or the other and moving the autofocus point slightly the Canon lens will instanly lock onto the other object. The Sigma lenses seem highly confused with this issue and will sometimes try to rack focus back and forth between the two objects.
