For anyone like me who likes to keep a full copy of their photos directory on external hard drives comes this free useful little utility from Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com …e41af06eb7&displaylang=en (external link)

The neat things is that it has a number of options, one of which (Combine) copies across new files and re-names but not deletions.

Free, useful and Microsoft. Not often you will see those words in one sentence!

Not the most powerful, or fastest, thing out there, but worked Ok when I used it. Can't beat the price.

What's nice about this program is that the backup it makes is not proprietary. I echo My Documents (which is on it's own drive) to an external hard drive. Need be I can just swap them out with each other and they are exact copies. I run the program about once a week and after the first time it only takes a few minutes.

The program is interesting and its origin is too. It was actually developed for photographers on location in the field. I have included a link to the documentation for the program, it's worth a read.
