Getting the hang of video mode, just playing around a bit with aperture and ISO..getting some nice results. Still struggling with getting good exposure with pictures though. Is it normal that when I take a picture, that the sky looks completely white? When I put the settings on Auto it looks better, I'm just retarded I think

For situations where I don't want the sky blown out, I try to find a neutral part of the sky that is somewhat in the middle of the dynamic range of the current scene and meter off of that.

Obviously, if the sky is too bright, that won't work. In that situation a Graduated Neutral Density filter might help. Or, you can take two exposures (one metered for the sky, and one metered for the subject) and blend them using masks in photoshop. If you don't want to use a tripod, you can also use exposure bracketing with high speed multishot. Just toss out the middle exposure and blend the two extremes in photoshop.

If I don't care about the sky, I just meter off of the subject. There are a couple of threads about "Exposing to the right", that you might want to read up on. I don't remember which sub-forums they are in, though. Maybe someone else has them subscribed to and can post the links.

Handheld night/evening shooting is for everyone with 60D. Amazing piece of camera. Who cares about magnesium. Canon has made an incredible piece of camera tool, again.

“Nifty-fifty, 1/60, 3.5, ISO: 640, -1 EV”

I’m of the impression that it needs less light than the 1000D I started out with. i.e. similar light circumstances and I get faster shutter at a given f-stop and lets say 1600 ISO. Probably wrong, have to test that some day.

I will second this statement. I was using my Rebel XS to take pictures of my 60d the other day and 1. I noticed my 50mm f/1.4 had lots of trouble focusing (low light condition) than it ever has when attached to the 60d.

The 60d's sensor is much better! Much much better

Some interesting reading about the metering system in the 60D.

Lens for 60D
I would someday upgrade my “kit lens”, there is of course several L lenses I would want but the idea right now is on upgrading the walkabout “kit lens” to 17-55 2,8 or 15-85.

What I’ve heard 17-55 is one kind of a sharp and fast thing but the extended wide angel of 15-85mm and larger zoom range is also appealing.

If you have/had both and you were forced to only keep one of them which one would stay?

The question for you would be simply, if you need the 2.8 then the choice is obvious. If not go with the wider range lens.

i love the 17-55. it's what was on my 60D most of the time. paired with my 70-200 f4 IS it was an awesome combo. a 10-22 might of made it a perfect set up.

sorry no experience with the 15-85.

In hindsight would you have selected/bought lenses that would go with you to a full frame?

i never thought about the FF thing. but maybe i should of. the 17-55 was my only EF-S so i was not in the hole to deep with the crop lenses. but with lens prices not coming down so much when resold i just think about it as renting a lens for a few months if i end up selling a lens.

i personally would think more about the IQ of the lens than the FF or crop aspect.

If you don't need the f/2.8, then the extra 30mm reach of the 15-85 could be very useful on the long end. On the short end, 2mm extra width doesn't sound like a lot until you're backed up against a wall or a cliff and the edge of your shot is JUST cut off at 17mm. A few years ago when I upgraded from a 28-105mm to my 24-105mm lens, that extra width was as much of a decision point as the better quality of the L-series.

A couple more from my mom's garden last weekend:

I ended up with a whole set of the honey bee on the lavender, and will end up printing them to hang on my wall.

I'm with Mike on that one, too much watermark talk in here. I watermark everypictures that goes on Facebook. My friends look at them, friends of friends look at them, firends of friends of friends who commented on them look at them. Each and everyone can downlaod them with that great ''Download this picture'' link. At least, they'll have my signature on it.

I'm doing it for publicty and visibility. You don't like it? Than gon on my website, they're not watermarked over there ;)

You sure wasted a lot of time typing, honestly I really don't care at all and I don't care what you do for a living or what you think or feel.

There's a lot of things we don't like about something, if people want to tag their pictures then it will happen. Stop crying about it.

Ah, I believe it's Babel Fish who has a clever little quote in his signature.

It applies here.

No one is crying, you acted rudely without regard and got called out on it. By all means disregard it as crying or a waste of time; it's a testament to your inability to have a discussion or be an adult. Thankfully you don't represent the average user here, and your friend already proved to be decent and thoughtful.

EDIT:
