I am considering the body only. I just feel like I could use a better mid range lens. I tend to keep the tamron 28-70 on all the time. But it gets a little soft. Sometimes the 28mm is too much zoom, and I wish I had the 18-55 lens on there but that one doesn't give me enough zoom either.
I usually shoot indoors theater photography....hence the collection of 1.8 and 2.8 lenses. But when I am out doors in the day time I feel like I have to carry the big gun and it gets heavy.
Is the kit lens a good lens?

Oh, for what you're doing I'd probably just upgrade the body only and hunt for better glass than the kit one.

Such as?

I have a friend who has the 60D and she loves the kit lens. She says she gets great colors with it.

She has a 70-200 f/4 lens but uses the kit lens instead and gets great results.

I'm jealous of her results and she shoots in AUTO mode for everything. Grrrrr.

I'm not doggin the kit lens, I owned it too. I'm just saying for indoor shoots, it's not really versatile. Your friend has the IS version or not? I mean the 18-135 comes with IS so maybe that's why she likes it more.

Also consider the Sigma 17-70 2.8 OS, it covers 2 of your lenses range already, but since you are saying it's not wide enough you'd have to go something with UWA.

@todmac: Sorry must have missed she owned the 50 1.8, I'm just surfing 5 forums at once and glancing too fast at work. lol

Yes she has the IS. Is yours not an IS?

I don't know if F/4 is going to be fast enough for indoor theater photographs. Have you looked into the wider end of general zooms? Tammy/Sigma 17-50 2.8 or the Canon 17-55 2.8?

I love the 18-135 IS kit lens, but I need something faster for indoor and low light...so it's going to a new home.

Also, I wouldn't be too concerned about the colors. You can touch them up a bit in PP to make them a little more "vibrant".

Okay I think I lost you somewhere along the way. I mean this lens of your friends: 70-200 f/4 <--does that have IS or not?

The 18-135 comes with IS, I don't think there was a non-IS ever made.

I feel like I am covered in the theater photography. I only mentioned it because that has been my priority in building my lens collection so far. Now I feel like if I am photographing out doors on a nice day, I have to carry too many lenses with me because of the limited ranges I have. The 28-70 isn't wide enough, and sometimes not enough zoom. I love my 70-200 lens, that was the mac-daddy purchase and I am glad I have it. I just can't really do any wide angle landscape with what I have. I can't just go off to have fun with my camera and only one lens. I was thinking the 18-135 or the 18-200 kit lens would be an easy way to fill that need. Both are IS lenses, but not L series. To be honest I don't know if I would come up with the money to invest in an L lens unless I was going to have some specific need for it. A certain type of photo assignment. I mostly just get assigned theater and night sports...and for that I have the 70-200.

Maybe I should just get the body. I do have the 18-55 kit lens from my T1i.

Sorry,
I am not sure if she has the IS on her big lens.

What I find is that when we are both in the same theater photographing our daughters she is using the 60D with the kit lens, I am using the T1i with the L series 70-200mm 2.8 IS. And she gets better photos shooting with the 60D on auto than I can get using any of my manual settings. Her equipment=$1000, my equipment = $2100....not fair.

It kind of makes me wonder why I spent all this time learning about photography.

Do not buy a Sunpack 6600PG for a travel tripod! Yes it's lightweight and cheap but damn....This thing cannot support the weight of my 60D! The Pistol head moves ALL over the place and will never properly lock.

Sucks I'm stuck with this until Friday, I rented a cabin in Breakers Point, Oregon to shoot some videography and I don't have a functional tripod!

BLEH!

....That said....This place is frickin' insane. Wow.

EDIT: Reading online....Ton of 7D / 60D users say the same thing, bummer!

Ah, I see. For an outdoor/general use lens, the 18-135 is a fantastic lens. Four-stop IS, quick (but not USM quick) AF, and internal focus all make it a great budget lens. But, in your position with your current lenses, getting the body only would probably suit you better.

Additionally, like Vixen said, have you considered any UWA lenses? It's hard to beat UWA when it comes to landscapes and whatnot.

If you don't mind me asking, do you have any photos online to share? I'd like to see what you're comparing to get a better idea :).

You are doing something wrong. Obviously. It's not the equipment, it's you.

EDIT: You are probably trying to achieve more advanced photographs, using advanced photography settings, and, that just means the picture itself will be harder to capture. The room for error is heightened when you start to customize everything yourself. I can understand how she's snapping away using automatic / greenbox settings and achieving decent results; those automatic settings will never put her iso, exposure or speed settings in a place that will make it 'difficult' to obtain the shot.

You don't have that luxury while attempting more advanced shots.
