You are doing something wrong. Obviously. It's not the equipment, it's you.

YES- quite clearly.

But it is still frustrating!

Or she is lying.

Sorry,
I am not sure if she has the IS on her big lens.

What I find is that when we are both in the same theater photographing our daughters she is using the 60D with the kit lens, I am using the T1i with the L series 70-200mm 2.8 IS. And she gets better photos shooting with the 60D on auto than I can get using any of my manual settings. Her equipment=$1000, my equipment = $2100....not fair.

It kind of makes me wonder why I spent all this time learning about photography.

Can you post some examples and maybe we can help? I'm not sure about any color differences on the two bodies, but do you shoot in RAW by chance and she doesn't? I know when you shoot and make JPEGs the cameras render the color a little bit ...Don't feel discouraged, at least you are shooting in manual mode. I try to force myself to learn and not to gimme into Auto mode. xD

Do not buy a Sunpack 6600PG for a travel tripod! Yes it's lightweight and cheap but damn....This thing cannot support the weight of my 60D! The Pistol head moves ALL over the place and will never properly lock.

Sucks I'm stuck with this until Friday, I rented a cabin in Breakers Point, Oregon to shoot some videography and I don't have a functional tripod!

BLEH!

....That said....This place is frickin' insane. Wow.

Aw! I use a video monopod http://www.bhphotovideo.com …Video_Monopod_W_Head.html (external link)

Found it better than my tripod when hiking.

I'd love to see some comparison shots!

Is that kind of comment really necessary?

Absolutely. It's 100% true. You can make it personal, or you can make it about the discussion and move on without offense. It's not like I even know who I am talking to; there is nothing personal about it.

EDIT: Mega irony points, I love the quote in your sig: "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind" -Dr. Seuss

Dnguyen,
I have two main galleries in my signature.
My friend is just a MWAC, so she doesn't have a shared site. The first is a photo from her facebook, the second is one of mine. Its hard to compare because the images are small. and they are not from the same piece so the lighting is different.

Maybe I should just save my money and stick with my T1i. I have just been saving to move up from the rebel line.

I fully willing concede operator error in many things.

This comment did not insult me.

But over all isn't there a value in moving up from a Rebel to a 60D?
I am making money on my photography. I find times when a second camera would be helpful.

I am probably mixing too many things in to this thread, as my first question was which lens should I get.

For $300 more than the body only I think I am leaning towards the 18-135.

My favorite lens is the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 - That thing is sharp, sharp, sharp!

I edited my original post with a little bit more information. Summary: You are attempting more advanced shots which equals heightened room for error, she's using automatic settings that will not allow her to mess up the shot save for shaking the camera or dancing.

EDIT: It's ALWAYS good news to hear the problem is you and not the equipment! Human error = fixable. Equipment error = shipments.

I would grab the 60D if I were you. I came from a Rebel XSi and felt like it was a good move. Higher ISO was the thing that pushed me out towards it in the end.

I found out that my tammy had a back focus issue-sent it in for calibration. That helped a lot.

And I will cosole myself with the thought that I am attempting more advanced shots. The freelance work I have taken is a curse and a blessing...gave me the money to upgrade but keeps me busy so I can't experiment and learn.

Just looking at her image, it looks like her camera cranked up the ISO a bit to expose the shot. It's quite a noisy image and doesn't have as much contrast as it could. This is where your 2.8 equipment would come in and give you the ability to keep a lower iso for more contrast and a faster shutter speed for stopping movements.

I think a 60D would be a great upgrade from your T1i. Better AF, higher ISO, more fps, etc etc, it would all be a good step up.
