Hi,
I would like to know how someone else would light this setting.
The bride and groom will be at the chairs and the wedding registrar will be on the other side of the table. The registrar has said that I'm not allowed behind her at anytime but on the sides are fine...

I'm asking out of curiosity, I have already photographed the wedding which was held in a small castle in Germany. I had a look at the castle before the event but was never allowed to look into this room.
So everyhting was a little rushed and unplaned.
I ended up setting two flashes high behind the front row slightly pointed towards the front. I was using ISO 800-1000 and still finding that was not enough for a fast enough shutter speed.
I didn't want on camera flash as I thought it would be distracting to the ceremony, but found it a hassle in not doing so.

Still,(from looking at this pic) How would you light this ceremony?

(this pic was taken at ISO 500)

I'd treat it like a white ceiling, see if it works, then if not i'd treat it like a black ceiling.

Sound advice there Tim, thanks.

Question for you Tim, If you were photographing a wedding reception with strong or only back lighting availible, to light the bride n groom would you use on camra flash?
and would you feel that you're disturbing/interrupting the reception by using this flash?

(anyone else can chime in too if they like)

How I light receptions. With a strong backlight i'd just jack the power up. If all I had was on camera flash then yeah, that's what i'd use, the other option is expose for the people which gives heaps of flare, poor contrast, and poor quality images. If the couple choose to have their reception somewhere that photos can't easily be taken we need to warn them in advance, then do our best to capture things in the situation they put themselves in. We're not magicians, but understanding light we can take photos most places.
