Rattlesnake on the road to the bottom of the grand canyon - yes - there is a road to the bottom. Incredible experience. A little out of focus, but I was shaking a bit and about 8 feet from him with a zoom lens on squatting in the road. He was cool as a cucumber - never even rattled at me.

A bit too close in retrospect probably, but exhilerating nonetheless...

Nice catch-and don't worry about being "too close". They can't jump. They can only bite from half to 2/3 their body length away, so you're safe as close as 6 feet.

I'm told this is a red sided garter snake. I spotted it last summer when I was preparing to put my kayak into the water.
