I believe this is a northern water snake. Around here they are just called water snakes or mistakenly identified as a water moccasin which does not even live here. Nasty critters with a serious attitude problem most of the time.

wild baby hognose from my nature walk today. the lil guy was a good model. for about 5 minutes then it was skrew this im outa here hahah. good fun.

Rattlesnakes are one of my favorite subjects to shoot in the summer. I grew up around them so I am not overly bothered by them and know how to deal with them. In recent years they have become more scarce and it is a troubling trend. They are now on the protected species list in our area.

Last week I drove allot looking for them and found this little guy sunning himself on a remote highway in the middle of nowhere. It was just about sunset so the lighting wasn't the best. He wasn't interested in hanging around and no matter what I tried he wouldn't coil up into the striking position.
