This tiny snake was hanging around one of the plants in our backyard. Although my wife hates snakes, my kids and I are fascinated by them. Living next to the Everglades means that we get more than our share of snakes coming through the neighborhood.

This is what it looks like as it makes its way onto my hand...

In this shot, we put a quarter down so that you can get the size perspective...

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3029/3096430097_d4d03767c1_o.jpg

Finally, here it is eyeballing some passing ants...

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/3097270198_6c88e41e1f_o.jpg

This last pic was taken as I was walking through an abandoned park near my home and saw this snake making its way across a bench table. As I hit the shutter button, its mouth had opened. According to the kids, this added some character to the image...

As an aside, unless it's a snake that I absolutely know is non-venomous, I never get too close to them. I just don't know enough about them and I wouldn't want to end up getting bitten by a venomous snake.

vine snake and fer de lance wer eboth in costa rica.

we found the vine snake while out looking for neotropical rattlesnakes....no luck on the rattlers.

the fer de lance was photographed in the rain forest about 15 feet off of the trail. he was just laying in ambush position waiting on prey. i crawled back thru the underbrush to photograph him...wearing sandals. i believe it was taken w/ the 100L macro and 1d iv.

we went road cruising one night and a nearly 6' fer de lance was crossing the road, the guide yelled at me to jump out and capture the snake...let's just say it didn't happen because for the 1st time in my life in dealing w/ snakes i was fearful.

I've encountered many things (as you can see on my facebook page), but that is the only time i have been afraid of something.
