Well I've just completed my first wedding and what an experience it was. I was doing it as a favour and to be honest I didn't have the proper equipment when asked but I begged, borrowed and rented for the gig. The B&G were well aware of my lack of wedding experience but were happy enough to use me. I only charged them for the lens rental and petrol. Hopefully no fee, no big expectations
Not that I didn't try my best to produce great results.
Being my first I was expecting some problems and boy did I get them. Wedding wasn't to 3pm so I planned to get to the hotel where the wedding and reception was taking place in good time. Just as well I did because when I came to within half a mile it I came across a 'Road Closed' sign - it was closed for a motor cycle road race. This led to a 5 mile detour.
Because of the proximity of the hotel to the road that was being used for the road race it's car park was full to the point of overflowing with cars and motorbikes. This made getting group shots difficult without getting any of them in the background.
The ceremony was very short (15 mins) and I then had approximately 90 minutes to get some group shot done. It had rained most of the day but thankfully it stopped to allow us to go outside for the group shots. These turned out to be difficult enough because I haven't got a single photo were everyone is looking at me or posing the way I asked them to (hands, feet etc). Ah well
Started to shoot the speeches and my main camera (40D) stopped focusing so had to switch to my backup (400D). Looked at the 40D later on and it seemed to be working okay so not sure what went wrong there.
Finished around 9pm and on the way home my wife, who had come with me, asked how many photos I had taken? Around 300 I think, I replied. Got home and dumped the cards to my computer - had taken over 700. Honestly didn't think I'd taken as many
Started to cull the photos and started to get disappointed with some of the results I was getting with the hired lens (24-70mm 2.8 L). Alot of shots seemed to have something that looked like motion blur and were totally unusable. This was very strange as photos maybe taken within a few seconds, with the same settings, were pin sharp.
So I have approximately 250 photos to present to the B&G when they come home from their honeymoon in 2 weeks time.
Overall it was a very enjoyable, if stressful experience. One positive, for my ego, that came from it was when I was speaking to the hotel host and told him that it was my first wedding. He said he wouldn't have known given the way I was directing, posing and controlling the quests
Sorry for the long post
