Gents, go easy please, I know the enclosed are not great. Shot with a Canon 400d on a 70-300 Tamron Lense.

I think I did myself no favours because they were travelling so fast (between 130-150mph) and it was a very grey overcast day. took about 600 shots all were on tv mode with a selection of shutter speeds between 1/320 and 1/1000 iso's between 200 and 400. These have been cropped and fiddled a bit with with cs3 (although I have no idea what im doing )

So to get sharper, more focussed pics, what should I be concentrating on?

Cheers,

Aidan

Looks like youve missed focus on a couple which is a shame as they are well framed apart from 3 which is clipped.
Next time you go to an event turn on back button focussing, i think its number 4 then select number 3, you then press the star on the back and it will focus, with this technique youll need al servo on and the central focus point selected.
Youve done well considering how fast they can go at what i assume this is the ulster?

Cheers,

Thanks for the answer, and the encouragement. I hadn't heard of back focus and will give it a go next time. It was indeed the Ulster, those boys are a different kind of brave!!!

Is the camera set for AI Servo autofocus? (external link)

DC Fan, yes it is.

I think I will try to get closer to the action next time (safely) and pick somewhere where they are going slower, perhaps the autofocus cant keep up? Most of the pictures i was taking were from 150-200yds

I think a problem you're going to have with a 400D and objects moving towards the camera that quickly is the tracking abilities of the autofocus. As you said, they were moving quite fast...I'm sure the camera had trouble tracking them as they approached you. Not much you can do about that except try to shoot from the side, or buy a more expensive body!

The body will have to stay for the time being SWMBO didn't exactly understand the need for this over the bridge camera :D:D

Any idea why a 7 x 5 upload is showing huge on the screen? I have removed the attachment cos it was so big..........

you could try using the manual focus and pre-adjusting it to a part of the track so when the bike comes past and is in level with that part of the track, you press the button and it will already be focused :D

Favourite loadout currently: Canon 7D mkI + 50mm f/1.4
Next desired loadout: Canon 5D mkII + 85mm f/1.2
Side Arm: 17-55mm f/2.8
What can you capture with the click of a button?
