I want to update the firmware on my camera.
I don't have a DC coupler though.
Basically, I'm asking if it's safe to do it with a battery and not ruin my camera even worse..and how long does the process take. Also, my Quick Control Dial is broke. Will I be able to make it through without using it?

With that old of a camera and your other problems I'd just leave well enough alone.

I'd not bother either, unless there's something in the newer version that fixes something you've got problems with.
What body have you got and what version is it currently?

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Someone suggested I update it.
I have to Canon EOS D60..and I'm not sure as my scroll wheel is broke and I can't get down far enough to check.

Just because I don't have a state of the art camera and don't have the money to buy a new one, I see no problem in trying to fix my issue with it.

I agree. Instead of a Firmware upgrade, it sounds like you need a hardware upgrade more...

Nor do I. You said the back wheel stopped working, inferring that it was working while in your possession. That doesn't sound like a firmware issue. Not having access to the menu means you don't even know if your firmware is current, or not. You certainly can attempt to update your firmware, at the risk of bricking your camera. That's why you're getting all the leave well enough alone responses.

The lady who had it before me says to give it a shot, so I'm assuming she hadn't updated it before?
The reason someone suggested this though is that the 'Set' button works but the wheel does not.
Idk. Think it's worth bringing it in to have it looked at?

As long as the repair costs don't outweigh the cost of a newer/better camera.

Firmware update should only take around 5 mins so as long as a decent, fully charged battery is used then you should be fine.

The firmware update process looks likely to need the quick-control dial be used to select "ok" but you can safely get to that point to find out.

I have a feeling that the problem is the actual switch, but it probably only needs the contacts cleaning...
